Staying hydrated is important, especially in hot weather.

TrailTap has a free map of drinking water refill points across Greater London.

This may help disabled people, carers, Personal Assistants and anyone travelling around London to plan ahead.

Take a water bottle with you and check where you can refill it for free.

The government has an Easy Read guide called:

The guide explains how to stay safe in hot weather.

Things you can do:

• drink plenty of water
• stay in the shade
• avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm
• close curtains in rooms that face the sun
• wear loose clothes
• check on people who may need extra support
• get help if you feel very unwell

Shape the future of SENDIASS - your voice matters

Achieving for Children (AfC) are reaching out to parents and carers of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Kingston and Richmond. AfC need your views to help us shape the future of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Information, Advice, and Support Service (SENDIASS). Focus groups will be held in Kingston on Monday 29th June at 10am in the Moor Lane Centre. The Richmond focus group is being held at the Hampton Family Hub on Monday 6th July at 10. Online session dates are also available. To register your interest, click here.

What is recommissioning?

Recommissioning is AfC’s process for reviewing and redesigning SENDIASS to ensure it is the best it can be for your family. AfC review the current service to plan how to make it even more effective, accessible, and supportive for parents and carers in Kingston and Richmond.

To complete an online survey for SENDIASS visit https://haveyoursay.citizenspace.com/afc/sendiass-26/.

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the death of our Patron, Ann Macfarlane OBE. Ann was a giant of the Independent Living Movement and one of the most influential disability rights campaigners of her generation. Her determination, leadership and vision helped transform the lives of disabled people across the United Kingdom, advancing the principles of choice, control, equality and independent living that remain at the heart of KCIL’s mission today.

Ann remained actively engaged in the causes she cared about throughout her life. Even in her later years, she continued to support disabled people’s rights, contribute to discussions on independent living, and offer guidance and encouragement to organisations and individuals across the disability movement.

As Patron of KCIL, Ann was far more than a figurehead. She remained actively involved in the organisation, attending Trustee and Board meetings and providing thoughtful advice, challenge and support. Her experience, wisdom and commitment to the values of independent living were invaluable to our work.

For many of us at KCIL, Ann was also a mentor and friend. Her guidance helped shape our organisation and strengthen our commitment to the values she spent her lifetime promoting. We will always be grateful for the time, wisdom and support she gave so freely.

Her passing is a tremendous loss to KCIL, to the disability rights movement and to all who knew her. Yet her legacy lives on in the freedoms, opportunities and rights that so many disabled people enjoy today because of her work and determination.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to those closest to Ann, her friends, colleagues and all those whose lives she touched.

From all the staff, Trustees and friends of KCIL thank you, Ann, for your leadership, your friendship, your wisdom and your unwavering commitment to a more equal world. You will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

Do you have a self-employed PA?

Our next Kingston and Croydon Direct Payment Forums will be a joint online event looking at Personal Assistant employment status.

Self-employed PAs can be a flexible and positive way to arrange support, but it is important to understand whether a PA is genuinely self-employed or whether the arrangement may legally look more like employment.

David Ashley from Independent Living Group will talk through the new Personal Assistant Employment Status guidance and help explain what people using Direct Payments may need to think about.

📅 Wednesday 24 June
⏰ 11am to 12pm
📍 Online

To book your place, please complete the sign-up form in the blog post, email [email protected] or call 020 8546 9603.
