This week is
At Oxygen, we believe prevention starts with conversation, education, and empowering young people to make positive choices.
Our What’s the Point? Programme began with a pilot at Southborough High School in 2014 and has been developed over the last 12 years. The programme is designed to help young people explore the realities and consequences of knife crime and violence. Through peer-led discussions and community partnerships, young people are encouraged to think about identity, relationships, trust, loyalty, and the value of life.
The programme is built around four key principles:
💛 Youth-led
💛 Voluntary participation
💛 Partnerships
💛 Creating critical “Wow” moments that inspire change
Delivered in schools by charities and community organisations, What’s the Point? helps young people discover their potential, positively influence their peers, and build safer communities together.
The programme has been successfully delivered across Kingston and Richmond and also by partner organisations in other areas including Newham and Hackney.
We are also grateful for partnerships that have supported the programme including Surbiton Rotary Club and London Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC).
“Being part of the ‘What's the point?’ programme was the single most significant thing I did throughout my secondary school career! It was the point at which I grew up, took responsibility and tried to change something.” Young Person
“The students benefited from the programme in so many ways. The students gave an assembly on knife crime and set up a student survey on Youth Justice. Watching those students who maybe would never have thought about being involved in public speaking and seeing the pride they had in their accomplishment was fantastic (not to mention, informative to other students listening to their talk). One of those involved even went on to talk on BBC radio about it, supported, again, by Oxygen mentors.” Teacher
With thanks to the young people at .newmalden for designing this poster.
