Final call for entries to ‘HOME’ photography competition!!!

There’s still time to enter the Alec Gill and Giroscope International Photography Competition, open to photographers of all ages and experience levels. This year’s theme is HOME – exploring what home means through people, places, memories and everyday life.

**Cyanotype sessions this half-term
Join us for cyanotype photography sessions for children and adults on Monday 26, Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 October, from 10am to 1pm. Booking is essential – email [email protected] to book your place.
Location: 46 Community Centre, 46 Wellsted Street, Hull, HU3 3AQ.
Explore the creative process of cyanotype printing and make your own beautiful blue-and-white photographic prints. Children can also print their own photo to enter into the competition!

**Competition entry fees and prizes

Adults (18+): £5 for up to two photographs – £500 prize.
Young people (17 and under): £2 for up to two photographs – photography equipment award worth £300.

Named after Hull photographer Alec Gill, the competition celebrates the stories, people and places that shape our sense of home.

**We all have our own idea of home, shaped by the people we meet, the places we’ve been and the experiences that leave their mark on our lives. Home can mean many things: belonging, loss, longing or a place we carry with us. Every story is different, and every one deserves to be seen.

What does HOME mean to you? Share it through a photograph before midnight on 30 October.

Discover West Park Open Air Theatre with Hilary Byers

Do you remember West Park Open Air Theatre? Or would you like to know more about its history and what might happen to it in the future?

Join us for a free talk with heritage conservation specialist Hilary Byers, who will be exploring the history of the theatre and its importance to Hull.

After the talk, we'll take a short visit to see the outside of the theatre, followed by a free lunch from Kitchen 23 and a chance to have a chat about what could happen next.

The theatre has been out of use for many years, but it was once a popular place for concerts, plays, school performances and talent competitions. Mick Ronson even performed there with The Rats in the late 1960s.

Giroscope is now speaking to local people about whether the theatre could be brought back into use, and we want to hear what you think.

Whether you remember going to performances, have old photographs or stories to share, regularly visit West Park or just have ideas about what the space could be used for, we'd love you to come along.

Everyone is welcome, and the event is free.

We recently paid a visit to Giroscope Hull the inspiration for the founding of Community Campus 87 back in the 1980's. Giroscope are doing fantastic work in the community, continuing to refurbish empty properties including a church and providing hands on training in construction, bicycle repair, IT refurbishment, gardening and catering. Still an inspiration!

Meet Duncan Roberts and Caroline Gore-Booth, our next Giroscope 40: Lunch Plus speakers.

Duncan Roberts studied at Hull School of Architecture and has designed and helped build more than 30 projects using the Walter Segal self-build method. A long-time Giroscope collaborator, he also worked on our three timber-framed social homes in Hull.

Caroline Gore-Booth is Project Manager at Giroscope, working across housing, regeneration and community development in west Hull, connecting practical delivery with bigger questions about who shapes our homes and neighbourhoods.

Together, they’ll explore radical architecture, self-build and community-led housing and why alternatives to the mainstream still matter.

Cyanotype Photography Sessions During Half Term very soon 🙂

Join us at 46 Community Centre for our Cyanotype sessions, where children can explore the art of cyanotype printing, a process that uses sunlight to create beautiful blue images.

Last week we hosted a group of architecture students from Sheffield University. Over the next 6 weeks they will work on a Live Project looking at abandoned and underused sites in our neighbourhood and how they could be developed or improved to provide new housing, other neighbourhood services or improve biodiversity. HOME is where the heart is - is a true saying.

But what does home mean to you?
We asked our judges to choose a photograph connected to the idea of HOME — a photograph that might inspire and encourage others to take part in this year’s competition.
Here are three very different photographs, from three of our judges, and the stories behind them.

“HOME is where the heart is - is a true saying.
It is a feeling of love and safety - away from the outside world.
This photo seems to capture that feeling for me.”
**Iranzu Baker — La Huerta, Spain, 1978 (Chris Baker)
“My dad took this photograph of my cousins playing at La Huerta, which means the orchard or vegetable garden.
La Huerta is a plot of land that belongs to my aunt and uncle, but it's always been a place for the whole family, where we gathered during our summers in Spain. Whenever I go back, it feels like home.
I scanned this image from my dad's slide collection in 2020 while putting together a photo album for my mum's 70th birthday. Looking at it again brought back so many happy memories. Aesthetically, I'm drawn to the heavy grain and spontaneity of photos like this one, and to pops of colour, like my aunt's pink skirt.
La Huerta still brings our family together today. Watching my son Milán play there with his cousins, just as we did, is a real joy. To me, family feels like home, and our photographs are a record of the moments and places that have meant so much to so many of us. Our shared histories.”

“I had been supporting this person for over four years, he had gone from rough sleeping to being accommodated in that time, I had even got to know his parents and one thing that struck me was how his mother described him as being a ‘wrong un’ the day he was born. When I used to visit him he would never let me see his bedroom, when he finally did I was shocked by the state of the mattress and the knife sticking into it. My red flags were immediately raised until he explained that there was a women that lived on top of his wardrobe and she would appear at night so he used the knife to protect himself so looking carefully at the mattress it was covered in stab marks.”
Three photographs. Three very different stories. And three reminders that HOME can mean many different things.
