What does it actually take to make lasting change in a neighbourhood?

Read Caroline Gore-Booth's article which gets into the reality behind the big ideas: buying and renovating homes, keeping programmes going, finding the right finance, creating routes into work and making sure good work isn’t forced into short-term funding cycles.

Part one goes back to Giroscope’s beginnings in the mid-1980s, with founders reflecting on what inspired them to start the organisation, how its community-led approach developed, and whether a similar model could emerge in today’s social and political climate.

We're happy to announce that Hillbilly Troupe will be providing the soundtrack to Giroscope’s 40th Anniversary Dinner on 24 September at St Matthew’s Community Enterprise Centre.
Hull through and through, the Hillbilly Troupe bring together folk, punk, ska and a healthy dose of Americana — music made for dancing, singing along and, occasionally, thinking about the world along the way.

Happy World Photography Day!
This year’s theme is ‘Home’ — and it happens to be the theme of this year’s Alec Gill and Giroscope International Photography Competition too.
Home can mean a lot of things. It might be your house, your street, a familiar view, a favourite place, or simply the people around you. It can be somewhere you’ve lived for years, somewhere you’ve recently arrived, or somewhere you no longer live but still think of as home.
This is an opportunity to reflect on the places, people and moments that make a place feel like home.
We’re looking forward to seeing the different ways photographers interpret the theme, and the stories behind the photographs.

Today we had our Flower Tapestry workshop as part of Giroscope’s Summer Healthy Holidays Programme, and it was so much fun!

A big thank you to all the participants who came along and made the day so special. We invited parents and children to go foraging and collect natural materials, then create their own frames from twigs, filling them with beautiful flowers, greenery and imagination.

It was wonderful to see everyone getting creative and enjoying nature together! Healthy Holidays Hull

Pride in Place: Recognising Jamie.

As Chairperson of Pride in Place, I want to take a moment to recognise someone in our community who truly deserves our appreciation.

Jamie is one of those people who quietly gets on with making a difference. You may have seen him out and about, walking our streets and picking up the rubbish that others have left behind. He doesn't do it for recognition or praise; he simply sees something that needs doing and takes pride in putting it right.

And you can tell when Jamie has been down a street. It looks cleaner, tidier and cared for. He makes a real difference to the appearance of our area, and his efforts do not go unnoticed.

We often talk about community, pride in place and what we can all do to improve the areas where we live. Jamie is a fantastic example of putting those words into action.

Jamie, on behalf of Pride in Place and our community, thank you. Your hard work, your time and the pride you take in our area are genuinely appreciated.

You are a credit to our community, and I hope you know that the work you do is noticed and valued.

40 years ago today, Giroscope became a company.
On 13 August 1986, something that had started with a few people, some brave ideas, a few empty houses and a determination to do things differently became Giroscope Limited.
They learned as they went. They renovated homes, built skills and created opportunities, first for themselves, then increasingly for others.
Four decades later, that DIY spirit and belief in the power of people to change their own lives and neighbourhoods still runs through everything we do.
As part of Giroscope 40, we’re looking back at where it all began and celebrating the people, ideas and radical optimism that got us here.

As a young entrepreneur, signing up to the MC4C start up programme,the support goes beyond the workshops, one to ones and grant opportunities.

Three years after completion Oat Video Productions held a test screening event Giroscope Hull showcasing their documentary on the Queen of Hessle Road, Bobby Mandrell.

This has been supported through the scene but not heard, heritage project.
