There are still significant delays by Hull City Council in deciding on a date on which Adult Education will be moving out of the Avenues Centre, due to the knock-on effects of delays in the preparation of other buildings in the city. It is likely to be towards the end of 2025.

The Avenues Centre Support Group hopes to use the time in effective liaison with Hull City Council as we continue towards the eventual outcome of a Community Hub. A Project Board is being set up, consisting of Councillors, Council Officers and representatives of ACSG.

The Council have announced funding of £700,000 for the Avenues Centre, which is very welcome news. ACSG are currently seeking clarification about use and timescale but as yet have not had this information.
The Hall at the Avenues Centre can now be booked on an hourly basis. UPDATE FROM THE AVENUES CENTRE

The Avenues Centre Support Group continues its liaison with Hull City Council, keeping in mind our long-term aim, and the Council’s stated commitment, of a community hub in the Avenues Centre.

The scoping study for the Centre to consider the determination of future use and any associated works is unlikely to be completed before early 2025. This is because of delays to associated projects in the city resulting in the likelihood that Adult Education, currently occupying the Avenues Centre, will not move to their permanent home in the Derek Crothall building on the corner of George Street and Wilberforce Drive until some time in 2025.

Although this may seem a long way off, we feel it is time to start gathering ideas from people in the community about what they would like to see in a community hub, and at a recent meeting began plans for a public meeting on this topic. We hope this will be held in the Spring.

Meanwhile, our fine building is in good use, and has been well repaired, some of those repairs very timely, and we can be confident that it will go on to house expanded activities on behalf of the community in the coming years, and for many years to come.

Some of you will have seen a new page regarding the Avenues Centre set up by CIME in the last couple of weeks (but now disbanded), about the idea of a community hub at the Avenues Centre.
As you will be aware, this has been a long-term aim of ACSG, and we have been working steadily towards it since the early days of 2014 after your support enabled our campaign to stop the building from being sold off or demolished. Listing followed in 2016, and for a while, we seemed to have a future working with the Goodwin trust. However, since Goodwin’s decision to withdraw from their lease of the building we have been working directly and happily with Hull City council to further the future of the centre. Currently, the improvements and repairs are entering Phase 2 and we are hoping to have some consultative input into the exciting plans for the prospective community hub, preferably including a much-enhanced library moved from Chanterlands library on which public consultation is imminent, any link to which will be shared here. Arrangements for the building under Phase 2 cannot take place till 2024 when Adult Education relocate.
We would like to reassure you that ACSG is still working with Hull City Council and that unless you hear otherwise directly from the council any arrangements you have with them are still in place. We are at present liaising closely with Rob Pritchard, Portfolio holder for Communities and Culture, and will keep you informed of any developments as they arise, possibly including through a public meeting.
We also have a wider support group which you can join by direct messaging us then you will receive occasional informative emails detailing our activities.
Of course, the sooner we can get a community hub into the Avenues Centre, the better. But the timeline shown here will give you some idea of how long and complicated the road has been, dealing with an old, Council owned building over the last nine years, to bring us to a point when we are within sight of it happening.

We are meeting regularly with councillors and officers and hope to have news soon. We have been working on this for almost 10 years but progress in updating a historic building and examining new uses is always going to be slow. Thank you for all your support
