Pruning with yet more friends joining us each week.
The photos show Paul's first spot of a shield bug this year.

This fine looking Bronze Shield Beetle was taking in the spring sunshine this morning on the orchard.

They do seem to be the some of the most friendly and mild mannered of our bug inhabitants on the orchard, never too shy for a little photo opportunity and a bit of human appreciation as they go about their business!

Photo description: Bronze coloured shield shaped reasonably flat backed and smooth shiny surfaced beetle is exploring the long orchard grass on a sunny day.
It has long antennae which it is using to navigate the blades of grass

We have rested from Wassailing and are deep into pruning

We won't be doing a full prune this year.
After many years of back breaking work every winter we need a rest.
To check the orchard wouldn't be harmed we left a small section of George Caves, the more unruly of the trees last year to see what would happen, they still produced abundantly and although in definite need of a prune this year, having a year off did not do a thing.

With this in mind and hearing from other places we decided to take a half one year half the next approach to pruning as we do not have the energy and if it's not going to actually benefit the orchard then we need to scale back and think of our own health rather than push through.

Anyway signs we know that we are running out of time this pruning season are when our shiny red friends join us for the pruning

It's a sure sign Imbolc has just passed (if you go by the moon it was around 17th feb this year) as our good luck ladybirds rise from seemingly out of nowhere and sit in nooks to get warmed by the sun.
You would think they would be easy to spot but they hide in nooks so as not be too easy a target for the vast number of birds that scour the trees for insects.

It's lovely pruning then happening on a lady bird, always a nice surprise, Isobel was super lucky and found 4!!

Please could you all show your appreciation for the amazing work our HEY volunteers do for our City by voting for them in the Visit England awards, they have been shortlisted to the last ten out of hundreds of entries.

We would have not been able to run the orchard without the help of HEY volunteers and all our events have been wonderfully supported by the volunteers too.

Thanks so much to everyone involved in the first ever Community Wassail at Garrowby orchard!

We had a photographer so will get some swanky posh photos put up as soon as Luke has passed them on.

That's the end of our large Wassail events but from now until Lunar New Year we will be traveling around Hull to deliver boundary blessing to our community green groups so they can Wassail their green spaces too!

Let's bless our whole city and spread the love to keep us through Winter!

Yesterday our first The Friends of Alderman Kneeshaw Park Wassail was helped along by the production of a lovely leaflet.

This was produced by artist Anna Farley as part of a year long residency at Humber Street Gallery where they have been working with the park

Residents also worked with Writer Anna Turner to create an immersive story as we travelled through the park, these included characters like a Raven who is the spirit of Alderman and an amazing fire performance from Ed Grimoldby (thanks Back to Ours ) who was the Flame of Alderman who gave us a torch so we could bless and protect the Mother tree, a little Ribston Pippin apple tree called Maureen!

This work will form the basis of future Wassails where we will adapt and grow the park story to shape new legends that inspire our community now

We had an extraordinary time Wassailing The Friends of Alderman Kneeshaw Park today.

The weather was amazing and we had around 60 people parade round the park.

The Spirit of Alderman Kneeshaw park found the Flame hidden in our Fire Willow then marched the flame to the Mother Apple tree, Maureen.

It was incredibly special and we are very excited to be bringing it all to Garrowby orchard tomorrow.

We will have a fire, cake and hot drinks!

Join us 2pm, Friends of Garrowby Orchard Community
