Polish Christmas Eve Tradition

In Poland, Christmas Eve dinner, also known as Wigilia, starts when the first star appears in the sky. Although this meal is reserved for the closest family, it’s customary to set an extra plate and seat for an unexpected guest. All members of the family start by breaking the Christmas wafer (opłatek) together and exchange wishes for good health and prosperity.

According to Polish tradition, 12 dishes are served during Wigilia, and it is believed this number is a symbol of wealth, the 12 Apostles and brings luck for each of the months in the upcoming year. Some of the dishes that are served include Barszcz with Uszka (beetroot soup served with tiny dumplings), Żurek Z Grzybami (Polish Christmas mushroom soup) Pickled Herring, Pierogi, Salatka Jarzynowa (boiled veggies salad), Kluski z Makiem (pasta with poppy seeds), Makowiec (traditional Polish poppy seed cake with raisins), Kompot Z Suszu (dried fruit drink).
