Shine Relief’s head office in Hull, UK works to generate funding for the activities in Malawi. The organisation receives no funding from the government, so the income is received from donors, Trusts and through various fundraising activities. Shine Relief Trust, established in 2008 by a group from UK and Malawi has a heart to see renewed hope and vitality brought to the poverty stricken rural comm
unities of Malawi. Shine works in TA Kuntumanji in Zomba District were amongst a population of 72,000 1 in 6 were found to be orphans. A Situation Analysis revealed a high need for intervention with very low numbers of support networks. We believe that help begins by understanding African culture and not by imposing westernised culture. Our project started by listening to the local people as they told us what they want to do and what we can do not for them but with them. Shine involves the local community as much as possible and whenever possible, providing multi-agency solutions in order to advance the local economy and community. The program led by Suzen Zidana and her husband Hastings Zidana is overseen by a Malawian trustee board whom report to UK stakeholders. Together a strong team of eleven local staff members and volunteers operate from Shine Village site to deliver vital support in partnership with the DC Office, ADC, and a number of CBO’s and local schools. Shine’s Resource Centre established in 2014 provides a well-used facility for the community and education for 2-5’s with an attached feeding program and training opportunities for parents. All support given is funded through our regular supporters. Emergency disaster relief including food, clothing, healthcare and shelter is regularly distributed from this base. With increasing support from the UK and encouragement from the local population in Malawi, Shine has expanded its activities across its land acquired in 2012 to provide agricultural income generating opportunities with the aim to make the project sustainable. A complex of buildings featuring a school, medical facility and housing for vulnerable children will provide orphaned children without the kinship support networks a chance to flourish, growing in a family setting, attending school and learning essential skills for a better future.
