🌳 We’re delighted to share that our key Tree Stories resource is available in Polish, Romanian, Kurdish (Sorani) and Arabic - the most commonly translated languages in our region - thanks to the incredible support of Language is Everything.

As a project, we’re committed to telling the stories of everyone (and every tree) who calls Hull and the East Riding home. We know that nature-focused projects have historically engaged certain audiences for the most part, but we’re keen to change that. The trees around us (local ones and ones which remind us of elsewhere) are part of all our lives, and we want to hear the memories, experiences and stories connected to them from people of every background.

If you are part of, or work alongside, communities who use these languages, you can and download/print the translated flyers on our website: www.hfoe.org.uk/treestories

A huge thank you to Language is Everything for helping us make Tree Stories even more accessible to even more people.

Today was our first public Tree Stories workshop - ‘Tree Connections’ delivered by creative outdoor educator Onyx Ocean!

After a cuppa at Ground Gallery, we set off to the nearby bit of Barmston Drain to see what trees we would meet there (and en route!). Through tree identification books, apps and creative processes, we got to know a whole community of trees fairly close to Hull City Centre. Thank you Onyx for facilitating a relaxing and educational workshop… it’s the best way to spend a Saturday afternoon 🥰

We’re busy behind the scenes organising more free tree-focused workshops as part of our Tree Stories community project - watch this space!

We’re proud to promote a new youth installation by Generation Hull Arts Council pupils at Malet Lambert School, which uses trees as part of its powerful storytelling.

“In another realm of mountains, forests, lakes and strange magic, stands a tree so enormous it can be seen from every corner of the land… which the Beings call the Heart Tree. Its roots stretch beneath their entire world, and somehow, impossibly, beneath ours too. Through this vast mycelial network, the Tree feels everything...

For the first time in centuries, the Heart Tree burst into bloom - thousands of glowing pink blossoms opening across its branches in response. Across the land, the Beings saw the signal and understood immediately: The call for a Gathering had been made…”

🌳 OPEN CALL: Tell the story of a local tree 🌳

Tree Stories is a creative community project led by Hull & East Riding Friends of the Earth, with support from local climate artist Lauren Saunders Art and The National Lottery Community Fund.

Live in Hull and East Yorkshire? We’re inviting YOU to tell the tale of a local tree.

This could be through poetry, artwork, music, wildlife observations, film, photography, maps, memories, folklore, science, or even something imagined. We welcome responses from people of all ages, and it's free to take part.

Every contribution will help build a shared Digital Forest - a publicly accessible online map of trees and their stories across Hull and the East Riding, to explore both virtually and in real life.

Alongside this, there are free workshops to get involved with (more announced soon!) plus opportunities for local groups to get involved.

If a local tree means something to you - in any way at all - we want to hear from you.

🌱 Submit your Tree Story

Some trees stay with us forever … even when they’re gone 💔🌳 For Hilary, a sycamore tree was everything - a house, a school, a theatre, a place to dream.

Until one day … it was gone.

That loss taught Hilary something powerful:
🌱 Not everything we love is permanent
🌱 Nature is part of our story
🌱 And trees are never “just trees”

How about you? Do you have a tree you’ll never forget? A place that meant something special?

🌳 Share your story with us: https://www.hfoe.org.uk/treestories

Let’s make sure these stories live on 💚
