This is one of our beautiful, yet slightly crazy volunteers - Jim Stewart.
Jim has decided that rather than take on "just" a marathon as his first running challenge - he'd absolutely LOVE to do it, in MADRID!!
(The clue is in the first three letters of the word - Madrid!!)
Hello, I just wanted to give a brief update on where I am on the Madrid Marathon.
Over the last few weeks and months I've completed my long run programme and have run 21k, 24k, 28k, 32k and then my final long run last Sunday ran 21k, a half marathon.
It's always the last 2k that are the most challenging no matter the distance covered.
Saying "I haven't come this far only to come this far" to myself has help me push through to the end. Something I think I'm gonna need on race day.
So all good so far training wise.
Just need to watch out for those dark "Maranoia" thoughts that can come out if nowhere.
So what does race day look like?
Its a 42.2k, 26m race through the heart of Madrid and passes all it's major landmarks. Plaza Major, Plaza Espania, Campo de Madrid, the Royal Palace and Grand Via.
Starting at 650m (higher than the top of Dartmoor) and reaching 730m, it's the highest altitude capital city marathon in Europe.
It's also one of the hillyest, with an elevation gain of just under 400m.
Whilst talking about extremes, it's also one of the noisiest, it's not called the Rock and Roll Marathon without reason and there are over 20 rock, steel, brass, and blues bands spread throught the course to keep the 42,000 participants entertained (or is it to take their minds from the pain) during the race. (I've attached the route map.)
There are water stops every 5k but I will have to wait 25k to get my first banana!
So it's a fantastic event and I count myself extremely fortunate to be able to take part and to represent the Kingsmen as part of our Chairman’s Charity, Prostate Cancer UK, fund raising.
We've raised £1747 (plus £421 gift aid) giving a total of £2168.
It would be great to get it to £2500 so if you haven't contributed and would like to do so I've attached the link below.
A huge thank you to everyone who has already sponsored me. I really appreciate it and it really motivates me to complete the challenge ahead.
Best Wishes
Jim
