KHS is grateful to Dennis Cowan for giving an excellent talk on Scotland’s remarkable Sundial heritage for the April meeting. Scottish Sundial peak with the construction of monumental structures in the 17th century yet continues to this day. Sundials come in many shapes and designs. Dennis told us where best to look for them, from Burntisland to Holyrood Palace. Sundials have to be calibrated according to how far North (Kinghorn is 56˚ N), and alas those from garden centres seldom are. Alas the Kinghorn Millenium Sundial did not pass muster either as its gnomon (the blade that casts the shadow) was put on the wrong way round when last repaired. There are plan to address this issue!
