"My faithful friend, my fiddle, turns 150 years old this year. I wanted to celebrate this by doing a few gigs with Charlie Mckerron and Friends. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “The best tunes are played on the oldest fiddles” and I think he may well have been right about that.
I thought some fiddle enthusiasts might want to know a little bit more about the history of the instrument.
James Findlay from Padanaram, Forfar made my fiddle. It was completed in 1876 and was made in the typical style of an Italian Guarneri violin. He had several assistants and it is said that he made over 500 fiddles in his lifetime.
Jim Barrie, of the Wallochmor Ceilidh Band, told me that it was rumoured James Findlay had a production line of mill workers who all constructed different parts of the instrument through the master’s guidance. All the workers were eventually rewarded with a fiddle of their own, something they would not have been able to afford back in the day. James himself would have carried out the finishing touches.
I accidentally came across the fiddle in the late 1980s after my original fiddle was stolen from the Capercaillie van when touring down in Bristol. Gordon Stevenson, Edinburgh Luthier, kindly gave me the use of the fiddle and after many years agreed to sell it to me. He was happy that the fiddle was made in Scotland and was remaining in Scotland.
This fiddle has toured with me ever since, has featured on dozens of recordings and has had the odd repair. She has very much been part of my musical career for over 30 years and hopefully will be for a few more. I often wonder what amazing tunes were played on the fiddle before I owned her. She isn’t the easiest fiddle to play, but I love her voice in combination with other instruments, and of course it all depends on how well I am playing myself! I am also very proud that I am playing a fiddle made in Scotland.
