It is with much sadness that I report on the passing of our former Vice Chairman, Tom McNamara, Tommy to everyone who knew him, on Sunday 14th December.
Tommy’s funeral will be at Holmsford Bridge Crematorium, Dreghorn on 6th January at 3.30 pm.
For well over a decade Tommy and his wife Rae were the heart and soul of North Ayrshire Cancer Care.
Tommy had an easy, soft spoken, manner and was one of the most straightforward and honest people that you could hope to meet. People responded warmly to him and still regard him with great fondness.
Among many of the tasks he undertook, including helping with organised fundraising events, the running and maintenance of our shops and drop in centre, Tommy organised the drivers runs, along with a team of volunteer ladies, and personally undertook as many of these as he could manage. He was also at the forefront of drawing up standards and guidelines for volunteer drivers in agreement with the Beatson Cancer Centre.
Tommy continued for a short time after Rae’s untimely death in July 2018. But this and deteriorating health forced him to retire some time before Covid. Like so many of our drivers Tommy had suffered cancer himself and understood what many of the patients he was transporting were going through.
Not only will he be remembered fondly by everyone at North Ayrshire Cancer Care but by the many patients and families across North Ayrshire that he had helped over the years.
We could not have wished for a better ambassador.
