Well, that was a short summer...

After a few weeks of sunshine, it feels like Scotland has remembered what month it is.

The rain is great news for plants, of course. Japanese Knotw**d, Giant Hogw**d, Bamboo, and pretty much everything else will be making the most of it.

For us, it means muddy boots, wet jackets, and carefully picking our way through slippery ground, brambles and bracken while carrying out surveys.

The glamorous side of invasive w**d management isn't always what people imagine!

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Japanese Knotw**d doesn't hang about.
A few weeks ago, this would have been a small red shoot emerging from the ground. Now it's towering over the path and continuing to grow.

One of the questions we're often asked is why herbicide treatments aren't carried out as soon as the plant appears.

The answer is all about timing.

As the season progresses, the plant starts sending energy back down into its underground rhizomes to prepare for winter. This helps carry herbicide deeper into the root system, making treatments more effective.

It's a good reminder that with Japanese Knotw**d, bigger doesn't always mean you've missed your chance. In many cases, we're still waiting for the optimum treatment window.

Funny how once you recognise Giant Hogw**d, you suddenly start seeing it everywhere.

Roadsides, embankments, waste ground, riverbanks… at this time of year, it starts becoming much more noticeable across Scotland.

It grows rapidly through late spring and early summer, especially in unmanaged areas where it can spread and dominate surrounding vegetation.

Chances are you’ve probably driven past it recently without even realising.

The sunshine usually brings two things at this time of year…
More time in the garden, and more invasive plant enquiries.

Warm weather and longer days help plants like Gunnera (Giant Rhubarb), Japanese Knotw**d, Bamboo, Field Horsetail and Giant Hogw**d grow quickly as the season gets underway.

It’s often during a spell of nice weather that people properly notice what’s starting to appear around patios, fences, paths and garden borders.

Sometimes, a few days in the sun is all it takes for a small problem to suddenly become much more obvious.

A lot of invasive plant problems start the same way…..nobody realised what it was until it had properly taken hold.

We’re often asked to share our knowledge and help raise awareness of invasive plants like Japanese Knotw**d, Giant Hogw**d and Himalayan Balsam.

The earlier these plants are identified, the easier they are to understand and manage before they become much bigger problems.

Knowing what to look for really is the first step.

Bamboo doesn’t always grow where you want it…

In this case, the roots had spread directly into an old stone wall.

Removing every part of the rhizome could have damaged the structure, so instead of forcing a single approach, we adapted the treatment method to suit the site.

The surrounding bamboo was excavated, while targeted herbicide injection was used within the remaining roots inside the masonry.

Sometimes the best solution is not the most aggressive one. It’s the one that works with the site, not against it.

This is the time of year Giant Hogw**d really starts making itself known.

Over the next few weeks, these plants can grow rapidly and become difficult to ignore, especially along rivers, paths, waste ground and even in some gardens.

Aside from the size, the biggest concern is the sap, which can cause painful skin reactions when exposed to sunlight.

We’re now into the main season for treating Giant Hogw**d across Scotland.

If you’d like to know more about spotting it and why it’s such a problem, have a look at our website below.

A great result for the JBB team this week as we successfully renewed our SafeContractor accreditation for another year.

It means our business and working practices continue to be independently assessed against recognised health & safety standards.

Whether we’re carrying out herbicide treatments, excavation works or helping manage invasive plants in gardens, we know customers want to feel confident they’re using a professional and responsible contractor.

A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to maintain standards like this, so well done to the whole team.

Today marks Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday.

His programmes have inspired generations of people to appreciate the world around them a little more, from wildlife and landscapes to the importance of protecting natural environments closer to home.

At JBB, we work with invasive plants that can quickly take over outdoor spaces and impact native species across Scotland. Managing them is an important part of helping restore balance and protect local biodiversity.

A nice reminder today that looking after the environment comes in many different forms.

Happy 100th Birthday, Sir David Attenborough.

After a long weekend in the garden, we usually see the same thing…

More enquiries.

A bit of good weather gets people outside, starting projects, tidying up and making plans for the summer. That’s often when plants like Field Horsetail, Japanese Knotw**d and stray Bamboo shoots get spotted properly for the first time.

They have a habit of appearing just when you’re trying to improve your space.

If you’ve noticed something over the weekend that doesn’t look quite right, you’re definitely not the only one.
