Orangefield Flute Band was originally formed as a Lodge Band for LOL 564 and RBP 431. It began it's long history as a melody or first flute band in the townland of Ballinran on the outskirts of Kilkeel. The band met in the early days in 'Orangefield House', home of the Forsythe family until 1934 when the new Ballinran Orange Hall was opened. The band retains its original name till this day of 'Orangefield'. It was only in the 1950s under the baton of Mr Beddoe Hanna that the band started to take on playing simple part music. It was a gradual charge, as 1st and 2nd flutes were added, then 'F' flutes and bass. At this time the band were playing on a set of Crown AZ flutes (wooden) with A flat, D, F, E flat Bass as they were known. Beddoe Hanna was band master of the band for over 20 years until 1973. In the late 1980s, Samuel Newell became conductor and Orangefield took part in contests for the first time in the 1990s. The band competed in their first Flute Band Association of NI contest in 1990 in the Own Choice in Grade 4. To the delight of the members and supporters of the band they attained first place. In 1991 they repeated their performance at the same competition and again took first prize. In 1992 they entered their first major Ulster Hall (NIBA) contest in Grade 3, they won this for the next three years. In 1993 Orangefield changed flutes to the Boehm system which enabled the band to progress further. Alan Trimble is the current conductor of the band.
