Birch Hill Dog Rescue We are an independent registered charity based in South Shropshire. We rescue dogs of all breeds. 💙 No dog was to be turned away.

First set up back in 1996, Birch Hill Dog Rescue has always offered unwanted, abandoned and neglected dogs the very best of care. The Rescue Centre is situated in the picturesque village of Neen Sollars, just over 2 miles from Cleobury Mortimer on the south edge of Shropshire. Birch Hill House was built in 1850 on the land which used to be a stone quarry. The "Live and Let Live" pub in the village was built from the stone produced from here. During the war it was used by evacuees and six families were sent to stay here. The approach to the house is by way of a long drive which originally went through a damson orchard which in itself was unusual. Now in spring the drive is carpeted either side by a blanket of snowdrops. In 1989 the kennels were built for purely boarding purposes, but over the years things were to change. It was in 1996 that Jutta and Terry Patterson took over Birch Hill and continued to run the boarding kennels, but the Pattersons love of helping unwanted and mistreated dogs was to take over Birch Hill completely. They slowly began to take in abandoned dogs from here and there and if there was a needy dog wanting refuge, Jutta would always find a space for it. Before long the amount of rescue dogs coming in overwhelmed the number of dogs coming in for boarding. Sadly, without any support of volunteers to do any fundraising for them, the Pattersons had to fund the rescue from their own pockets. They received no donations in way of bedding or food for the dogs, and often especially in winter, to keep the dogs warm they would rummage through their own clothes to try and find some items to put in the dogs' beds. To say that life was harsh would be putting it mildly. Over time Birch Hill's reputation for giving the utmost care for the dogs would spread to other rescues. Other rescue charities began to house thir dogs at Birch Hill which provided the Pattersons with a little income in order to help their own needy dogs. Even the RSPCA would use the kennels to house ill-treated and badly neglected dogs, such was the level of care and patience that Jutta offered them. In 2002 Terry Patterson took on the role of Dog Warden for South Shropshire which he held for approximately 4 years. This meant that dogs picked up as strays would go to Birch Hill for 7 days, paid for by the Council until their owners collected them. However, after these 7 days the dogs left would have nowhere to go. Without any grant or support from the council, Jutta would then keep these dogs there too and try to find them new and loving homes. Having a non-destruction policy meant that dogs would stay there, no matter what age until a suitable home could be found for them. As you can imagine these extra dogs would add even more weight to an already heavy financial problem. Throughout these difficult times, Jutta and Terry would always support the other rescue charities, not just by caring for their dogs but also helping out with fundraising events even though they received none or very little support for their own rescue. In 2009 Birch Hill saw an increase in the dogs rescued by themselves which took up limited spaces available leaving other rescues to house their own dogs. Birch Hill nowadays concentrates on its own rescue, it has to. Sadly, now due to the economic climate we live in and the effects of the credit crunch, Birch Hill is struggling to survive, and as we are endeavouring to provide accommodation for more and more dogs, most of whom now need veterinary attention, we are finding it difficult to meet the soaring costs of providing a caring service. Since 2009 some light has come out of all the gloom, Birch Hill now has a handful of volunteers willing to change its history and to guarantee its future. These volunteers offer their spare time for free and help out with fundraising activities. In 2010 we were able to reach the requirements of the Charity Commission to become a registered charity. Over the years many a desperate dog has owed its life to Birch Hill Dog Rescue, its very own survival means that many more still have that chance. Your support is a vital part of our existence, every donation no matter how small is much appreciated.

Our lovely Reuben hasn’t had the slightest bit of interest yet. 😞

He’s hoping his limited sight isn’t putting people off, because he wants everyone to know that his disability doesn’t define him, and he leads a very happy life!

Reuben turns 4 in December, and we would absolutely love to see him settled into a home of his own before his next birthday.

Reuben would love a home with his own garden to potter around in and a family who will take him on the walks he enjoys so much. He copes with these just fine and has so much life to enjoy!

He doesn’t mind other dogs, although he can be a little overexcited and silly at times! His limited sight can mean he has the odd clumsy moment during play, so he could potentially live with a large, very relaxed dog who wouldn’t mind the occasional accidental bump. 🐾

No cats and older dog savvy children preferred who understand Reuben needs to be approached calmly and given the chance to know they are there.

As well as being a cuddly and affectionate boy, Reuben has plenty of personality and comes with all the typical Husky extras, including:

🐺 Husky tantrums when it’s time to come inside ✅

🐺 Husky backchat, usually when negotiations about coming inside aren’t going his way ✅

A little bit about Reuben’s eyes and his ongoing care:

Reuben is completely blind in one eye and has limited sight in the other. His blind eye needs to be monitored, as pressure can build up and, if this happens, he may need surgery.

He has also recently undergone entropion surgery on his eye with limited sight to stop his eyelashes from rolling inwards, which has made him feel much more comfortable.

We understand that the thought of adopting a dog with additional medical needs can be daunting, so we want to reassure potential families that any future eye issues will be covered by us as pre-existing conditions. His new family won’t need to worry about arranging cover for these issues themselves.

We’re also happy to discuss Reuben going into a permanent foster home rather than being formally adopted, if that would help open up more possibilities for this special boy. 💙

🥺 Please don’t let Reuben’s limited sight be the reason you scroll past him.

He’s still a happy, loving, playful boy who deserves a family of his own. He might see the world a little differently, but he has just as much love to give.

Can you offer Reuben the home he’s been waiting for?

If you can’t offer him a home yourself, please consider sharing his post. You never know who might be out there looking for a boy just like Reuben, and your share could be the one that finally helps him find his family. 💙

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the family and friends of Michael Farebrother, who sadly passed away recently.

We are truly grateful for the generous donations totalling £250 made in his memory.

This kindness will help us continue our work caring for dogs in need and is a wonderful tribute to Michael. 💙

Not long until Simon takes on his cycling challenge! 🚲

This Saturday Simon will set off from the kennels in Cleobury Mortimer and will make his way to our charity shop in Worcester City Centre!

Outside the shop we will be running a tombola with some great prizes to help raise funds to add to Simon’s total.

After a break at the shop Simon will then be cycling back to the kennels. He’s doing this challenge to help raise funds for our Operation Sunrise Project which is all about building a brand new kennel block for our dogs. 🐶

If you’re heading into Worcester on Saturday, please pop over to our shop in Mealcheapen Street where you may win a tombola prize or even pick up a bargain in our shop! 🛍️

You can donate to Simon’s challenge at the shop on the day, or you can click the link below.

Thanks so much to everyone who has donated already. 💙

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

With this year's Christmas Tree Festival at Worcester Cathedral fast approaching at the end of November, our thoughts of this year's theme are on our minds.

This year we celebrate 30 years of saving dogs and rehoming them.

Now this is where YOU come in. If anyone has ever rehomed a dog from Birch Hill Dog Rescue between the years of 1996 and 2026 and you would like a photo of your dog to hang in a bauble on this year's Christmas Tree then all we need from you is:-

1) A good photo of your dog
2) The dog's name
3) The year you adopted the dog from Birch Hill

Then all you have to do is either message us the photo and details through facebook or email us at [email protected] or send by post to Birch Hill Dog Rescue, Birch Hill House, Neen Sollars, Cleobury Mortimer. DY14 0AQ

Depending on the response, we may not be able to include all the dogs.

That’s Jakey off to start his trial period today. 🥰

We always try to get our older dogs out and into a home as soon as we possibly can and thankfully, Jake didn’t have to wait too long.

Thanks so much to Mobile Dog grooming by Kate for giving him a much needed bath on Wednesday so he went off today looking the business. 👌🏻

Good luck little man. 💙

Big Boy Op for Coffee today before he goes off on his trial period soon. 🥰

He was awake and recovered super quick so we were able to collect him quite early. He was very pleased with himself when he got back. 💙
