Now the beekeeping season is coming to an end we have some informative speakers coming in. Last week it was Beekind Pest Control who showed us how tricky it can be removing bee colonies from chimneys, trees, wall recesses and roofs to name a few!

🐝 Members apiary meeting 🐝

This week we met up at another members apiary to have a look at a WBC hive. These are the ‘traditional’ looking bee hives invented by a William Broughton Carr (WBC) in 1890.

We enjoyed tea, cake and a spot of beekeeping. Great to see some new potential members and some younger members getting involved.

If you want to know more about beekeeping, simply get in touch! 👍🐝

This week a few of us ventured out of the main site to a member’s apiary to discuss (argue) the various techniques of beekeeping over tea and cake 🎂 🍰 🧁

In amongst the discussions, we were able to sample some of our members spring crop of honey. Fascinating to try the different flavours from light and sweet, to citrus flavours and some honey very deep coloured with great depth in flavour.

Getting up close to investigate a WBC hive. Some of the comb was exposed and the bees quickly gather round to make sure none of the honey is wasted.

We think that they look like they are sat around a table enjoying their meal.

A hot day at the apiary yesterday, great to see the bees flying and the honey literally flowing… from the ‘flow hive’ 🍯 🐝

With the recent good weather the bees have been busy! Take a look at some of the frames some of our members have collected recently! 🍯

Have you heard of making a ‘Bee-line’?

Recently members of Bristol, Keynsham and North Somerset beekeepers met to learn how to trace bee movements. One method involved ‘tagging’ a piece of tinsel onto a bee’s back to help identify their flying direction, also known as a bee line!

Here we have a swarm collection in an awkward spot inside a hedge. The bees are dropped into a box beneath before being transferred to a mini hive called a nucleus or ‘nuc’.

Being a small swarm, this colony will be left to develop and expand before being moved to a full hive. 🐝

Swarm of honey bees clustering in a hedge are collected and taken to a new home.
