Have you heard of making a ‘Bee-line’?

Recently members of Bristol, Keynsham and North Somerset beekeepers met to learn how to trace bee movements. One method involved ‘tagging’ a piece of tinsel onto a bee’s back to help identify their flying direction, also known as a bee line!

Here we have a swarm collection in an awkward spot inside a hedge. The bees are dropped into a box beneath before being transferred to a mini hive called a nucleus or ‘nuc’.

Being a small swarm, this colony will be left to develop and expand before being moved to a full hive. 🐝

Swarm of honey bees clustering in a hedge are collected and taken to a new home.

🍯 Keynsham Spring Show 🌷
We were thrilled to have supported the Show again this year and won 8 of the 9 honey prizes! 🏆

Unfortunately our honey mobile blew away but there’s always next year! Our Bee talk by beekeeper Kev was well attended and great feedback, thanks to Keynsham Town Council and volunteers for the event.

Some of our bees enjoying the fruits of their labour 🍯 🐝

When we open a hive it will sometimes break honeycomb the bees have stuck to a roof or other part of the hive. In this case the bees had also filled it with honey. This valuable resource is not wasted they quickly lap it up and will put it back in new comb, clever stuff!

First check on this hive during a sunny, warm spell. Managed to spot eggs, brood and the queen. Stores of honey seem ok to hopefully get through to the warmer weather 🤞🌞.

This is a WBC hive, the outer layers make it look like a ‘traditional’ beehive shape and also provide some insulation from hot/cold weather.

Some beautiful photos of our bees gathering pollen. Bees use the ‘yellow stuff’ to feed young bees. This is an excellent sign that the queen bee is laying eggs and th colony is getting ready for the summer sunshine ☀️ 🍯 🐝

Great to see the bees enjoying this ever-so-slightly warmer weather 🌦️. For our colonies that have survived the winter we are getting the first glance of activity.

These very tidy hives are from one of Keynsham Beekeepers members and have a handy water bowl propped between them. Bees need water to survive and to help them process nectar into honey 🍯
