We received a report of a 12 year old boy who had got stuck at the side of the River Greta and could not climb out. Keswick team deployed with resources to cover water and rope rescue, but the Fire Service were first on scene and managed to quickly extricate the boy to safety. He was then handed over to the ambulance paramedics for a precautionary medical assessment.

On the first pitch of the Corvus a climber fell approx. 6m meters onto a ledge injuring his back. A second climbing party waiting to start the climb called for assistance. Support from Rescue 897 based at Carlisle was requested, and they arrived soon after assessing whether a winch to extract the climber was possible. Unfortunately conditions did not allow for this but they carried out two lifts of team members to the top of the crag with heavy rigging gear. A team member was lowered to the climber, and after carefully packaging the man in a vacuum mattress, he was lowered to a medical reception party on the ground. After checks and pain relief he was stretchered to the base of the Comb, where Rescue 897 was waiting to airlift the casualty to hospital.

After what seemed like a long afternoon a hungry team returned to base for pizzas and a debrief.

This Sunday at 18.00 Keswick Mountain Rescue Team members Jonny Hume and Matt Bazire set off on the 160 mile spinerace Challenger North race. It is a non stop running race from Hadraw to Kirk Yelthom. The organisers of the Spine races are very supportive of mountain rescue teams and give us a discounted rate to enter.

Jonny and Matt are doing it to raise awareness of the great work all mountain rescue teams do. Keswick is one of the busiest teams in England and this year is already looking like our busiest year to date with 66 rescues and 2677 volunteer hours already logged. Not to mention the countless hours training on a Thursday evening.

A lone walker descending the Cat Gill path from Walla slipped and injured her ankle. With the Thursday night weekly training about to start there were plenty of team members available to go out and help. She was located a short way up the gill and after some pain relief and an ankle splint, she was stretchered down and handed over to an ambulance for onward transfer to hospital.

A mother and daughter had set off to ascend Barf via the Bishop when they became stuck on the steep, unpleasant scree. A small team was despatched and quickly reached the couple who were short roped back down to the Swan Hotel.

Fortunately the number of call outs to crag fast people who use this path has reduced since the signs at the bottom recommend a less daunting route up Beckstones Gill.

A walker descending Aiken Knott slipped on wet grass causing an ankle injury. Keswick team splinted the ankle and stretchered the woman to the nearby road where friends transported her to hospital for further checks and treatment.

A 59 year old man was reported to be convulsing on the path above Swirls car park at the foot of Helvellyn. Soon after arriving at the car park team members met the man after he had managed to make some progress back down the path. After a quick check over he was assisted the short distance back to the car park to an ambulance.

On the descent from Dock Tarn a woman slipped on a rough section of path alarmingly close to a large drop into a steep sided gill. The fall resulted in a painful ankle injury. Keswick team provided various analgesia and splinted the ankle. During the stretcher carry to an ambulance she requested more analgesia, and perhaps under its influence, she asked “where’s the nice doctor, not you, the other one”. No doubt a quote the team will remember for some time.

A 34-year-old female suffered an ankle injury after slipping on a path while descending Blencathra with her partner. A team member who was out fell-running nearby reached the anxious casualty just ahead of the main party of team members to provide initial reassurance. On arrival, the team administered pain relief, splinted her ankle, and stretchered her down the hill to road so her partner could transport her onwards.

A man on an instructed ghyll scrambling activity suffered a leg injury while descending Stonycroft Ghyll. Keswick MRT members attended the scene, assessed the casualty, and administered pain relief. The team then secured him in a stretcher, carried him out of the ravine, and transported him back to the roadside.
