You might have noticed that one of our more unusual, and some say creepy, museum residents is currently missing from its usual spot.
Our famous cat, found in a naturally mummified state back in 1842, has temporarily stepped out of the building. We are still not entirely sure how it ended up in the rafters of a local church, but during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, folks often built dried cats into walls to ward off unwanted spirits.
The original nineteenth-century display label claimed the cat was already at least five hundred years old, and generations of museum staff have kept adding to that tally ever since. The honest truth is that nobody actually knows its exact age.
Don't worry though, he has only been taken away for some essential conservation work, although given how close we are to Halloween, you have to wonder if we should be a little suspicious about the timing.
