Keswick Museum

Keswick Museum We have been located in Fitz park since the building's first opening in 1898. Sharing the stories of life in the Keswick area through time.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia
The Keswick Museum and Art Gallery in Cumbria was founded in 1873 and had a number of temporary homes as it grew, including the Moot Hall in Keswick town centre. A building was purpose built for it, in Fitz Park, partly as a memorial to the Hewetson brothers; distinguished Keswick benefactors, and to commemorate the jubilee of Queen Victoria. It remains the o

nly purpose-built museum in the county. The two original galleries were the Main Gallery and the Model Gallery, the latter built especially for Flintoft's famous model. The building work started in 1897 and the Grand Opening was on Easter Monday, April 11, 1898. The 'Picture Gallery' was added later, through the energies of Canon Rawnsley, a Museum Trustee and one of the founders of the National Trust. It opened in July 1906 with its first exhibition held by The Lake Artists Society.

Volunteers’ Week begins today and what better way to kick off the week than saying how fantastic our volunteers really are.

They help out the museum in many different roles, some work with the collection, some welcome visitors, some with different types of events in the building. All contribute their time and effort to support the museum.

Every Volunteer Coordinator will say they have the best volunteers, but Volunteer Coordinator Laura would have to say that ours are the best and a fantastic bunch. They create a friendly, welcoming, safe environment for us all to collaborate in.

THANK YOU to all our volunteers for helping keep the museum doors open for the public.

If you are interested in volunteering at the museum why not hop on over to our website and take a look at the current available posts

These images of a copy of The Keswick Reminder from Friday March 28th 1958 were shared over on the Old Keswick page.

Some of the news included a Keswick bride marrying a Cheshire groom (a Miss Barbara Chilton to a Mr Michael Harvey), Threlkeld Cricket Club holding their annual general meeting, and the Edwards family of Lake Road had lost their parakeet.

Blimey it’s warm out there. If you’re wanting to beat the heat, and keep the kids cool, creative and completely entertained then why not come join us TOMORROW, Wednesday 27 May, for our craft sessions here in the museum.

Join us on for a workshop where your little pilots can build and decorate their very own:
🎨 Paper Bag Kites or
✈️ Wooden Gliders

Once our masterpieces are ready, we’ll settle in for a lovely story about kite flying adventures with our learning team.

Next, we’ll head out to the shady green spots of Fitz Park to catch the perfect cool breeze and watch those creations soar!

Choose from morning (11:00 AM) or afternoon (2:00 PM) sessions that cost £5 per crafter

There are only a handful of spots left and you definitely don't want to be left hunting for shade with bored kiddos.

Grab your spots now and secure your family's ticket to the coolest event in town! ☀️

It’s not just mountains here in the Lakes. If you look up the skies are incredible too!

We are so lucky to have some of the darkest skies around, perfect for a bit of late-night stargazing.

Even with a few rooftop lights and the moon doing its thing, you can see an absolute blanket of stars looking up over the rooftops.

There is nothing quite like wrapping up warm with a hot flask of tea and just watching the universe do its thing after a long day of hiking.

Are you a fellow night owl? Where is your absolute favourite spot in the Lake District to catch the night sky? If you've managed to snap a brilliant starry photo (or maybe even caught the Northern Lights!), drop it in the comments below because we’d love to see them! 👇
