On Wednesday, residents from Fairfield (Bedworth), Drayton Court (Nuneaton), Woodside Care Village (Warwick), Four Ways and Sycamores (Leamington Spa) took part in a Walking Football Tournament at Leamington RFC.

Although the weather looked uncertain on the journey there, everyone arrived in high spirits and ready to compete for WCS Care.

Thankfully, the skies cleared while WCS's residents were preparing for kick-off! They split into two teams for the tournament: 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 (Bedworth and Nuneaton) and 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 (Leamington Spa and Warwick).

Friends of the North battled their way to the final, where they faced residents from Royal British Legion's Galanos House. Both teams gave it their all, with goalkeeper Peter making several determined saves to keep the Friends of the North in contention.

The final finished 1-1, with the winner decided by a penalty shootout. After a closely contested match, Galanos House secured victory with Friends of the North proudly finishing in 2nd place. The runners-up went to collect their medals and certificate, which was presented by Mayor of Royal Leamington Spa, Cllr Sarah Boad.

Social Activities Manager Sherie, who helped co-ordinate WCS Care’s teams, added: "Everyone had the best time out in the fresh air, meeting new people. We had residents laughing and chatting about the tournament all the way home - a couple of them even asked when the next one's going to be!

"We'd like to thank the Royal British Legion for organising such a brilliant event. It was a wonderful day for our residents."

Denise, who lives at Westlands in Rugby, has formed a close friendship with Care Co-ordinator Tish, who has gotten to know her well since she moved in last year.

During one of their conversations, Tish discovered that Denise was originally from South Africa. She immediately thought of her colleague Meg from Drovers House, who is not just from the same country but the same city too. Thinking they would enjoy getting to know each other, Tish arranged for them to meet.

Meg brought along a collection of South African memorabilia, including photographs, African masks and books, which sparked plenty of nostalgic conversations. Denise shared her memory album, filled with photographs from her husband’s travels back home, along with preserved memories of his career as a horse trainer and professional snooker player.

The pair reminisced about life in South Africa, remembering the native animals and exciting safari experiences they had over the years. They also shared memories of African culture and traditions, talking about the women who would carry baskets and belongings gracefully on their heads, the beautiful face paints used for celebrations, and the colourful handmade beaded clothing and jewellery that reflected such rich heritage and craftsmanship.

Before leaving, Meg gifted Denise one of her books, packed with photographs of South Africa’s wildlife and places of interest. Tish said: “It was so lovely to see how happy Denise was after their conversation - Meg really made her day. Denise has been looking through her memory album a lot since they met and is already looking forward to their next catch-up.”

The feeling is mutual for Meg, who is equally excited to see Denise again. And next time, she’s promised to bring her dogs along too!

Last week, June celebrated her 100th birthday at Four Ways, her home in Leamington Spa. 🎂 🎊

June’s special day began with a visit from friends, a card from King Charles III and gifts including flowers and chocolates, followed by a trip to one of June’s favourite pubs, The Old Mill in Baginton, where she had also celebrated her 90th birthday. The occasion was made even more special as she shared it with her dear friends Lyn and Peter, who she has known for decades.

After lunch, June returned home to another surprise, as more friends had gathered to celebrate with her. Everyone enjoyed a lovely get-together in the café, complete with cupcakes and glasses of non-alcoholic wine. 🍷

As the team at Four Ways have spent time with June over the past year, they’ve loved hearing about her experiences and Lifestyle Coach Caroline wanted to share some of June’s story.

“June left school at 14 and worked at Barretts Shoes in Leamington Spa for 15 years before joining Lockheed, where she spent the next 24 years. At 21, she met her husband Roy, and one of her fondest memories is of them dancing together whenever they had the chance.

Now, June loves nothing more than being outdoors and walking every day, often doing up to 40 laps of the garden!”

When Caroline asked June what, or who, motivates her, she replied, “My mother. She has been my inspiration.” She was hardworking, independent and never one to let life pass her by - all values that have stuck with June throughout her life. June also shared that her mum volunteered at Four Ways around 45 years ago and spent many afternoons in the home getting to know residents.

Residents from Sycamores in Leamington Spa were ready for a fun day out, so they got on the Memory Maker minibus and headed straight to Tenpin 🎳💥

Bob was in the lead for more than half the game and looked set to take the win. But just when he felt victory was within reach, Valerie pulled off a surprise comeback to clinch the win! Bob could only laugh, saying, “She came out of nowhere!” 😄

Afterwards, everyone agreed that a well-earned pub lunch at Hungry Horse was the perfect way to round off the morning. 🍽️

Just the other week, Alex and Simon from Newlands in Kenilworth went on a zoo adventure to Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens 🐧🦏🦒🐫

Alex spent the day with Lifestyle Coach Hugh and met up with friends, while Simon explored the park with Wellbeing Co-ordinator David. They loved seeing all the animals, and Simon even got the chance to do something he never expected - feeding a herd of goats!

To top off a brilliant day, Simon stopped by the gift shop and picked out a life-sized capybara to take home. 👌

𝘿𝙧𝙖𝙮𝙩𝙤𝙣 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙩 𝙜𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙖 𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 🚶‍♂️

To raise money for their residents’ fund, residents and staff from Drayton Court in Nuneaton recently set off on a sponsored walk, covering 5½ miles from our Fairfield care home in Bedworth.

The walk was enjoyed by everyone who took part, including residents Ann and Anne! Inspired by London Marathon runner Jordan Adams, who carried a fridge on his back for the race, Ann wanted to add a unique twist to the challenge and so, she carried a homemade fridge door the whole way!

Everyone at Drayton Court cheered the group on with pom-poms as they arrived home. Lifestyle Coach Stacey said, “We’re still counting the final total but so far, we can say we’ve raised £450! We’re so happy and grateful for everyone’s support.

“All of the money will be going to our residents’ fund, helping us provide residents with more opportunities to do the things they enjoy, as well as try new experiences.”

Earlier this year, Simran from Mill Green in Rugby went on her first hiking adventure with Wellbeing Co-ordinator Rachel to see the historic waterfall Lumsdale Falls.

They enjoyed the experience so much that they planned their next trip straightaway: Hendrhyd Falls, the tallest waterfall in South Wales.

When the day finally arrived, Simran, Rachel and her son headed off together. They followed woodland trails, stopped along the way to listen to the birds singing and reached the waterfall, which Simran said was breathtaking.

Known to many as the ‘Batman Waterfall’ after appearing as the Batcave in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘒𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘴, Simran imagined seeing Batman at any given moment emerging from his secret hideout! 😄 She enjoyed spending time in the fresh air, relaxing in nature.

As they headed home chatting away about how the day went, they all agreed it was one they would remember for a long time.

Taking a trip down memory lane, residents and staff from Attleborough Grange in Nuneaton enjoyed their Memory Maker minibus trip exploring The Black Country Living Museum. 🚐💨

The day sparked lots of conversations, as they explored the museum’s shops, houses and historic displays. Home Manager Anne took part in a demonstration showing how clothes were once adapted for maternity wear using extra pieces of fabric, while others reminisced about the pianos their grandparents used to own.

The Co-op store brought back memories of wartime rationing and how favourite chocolates were packaged. In the post office, residents laughed as they compared the old stamp prices to today’s and agreed that chocolates bars and sweet tins were definitely bigger back then!

The group also spent time in the library flicking through Enid Blyton books and the record store where Derek, who played in a family band and recorded LPs with them, felt right at home.

Residents at Woodside Care Village in Warwick had lots of ice cream, lollies and drinks, while also enjoying a competitive quiz, some Connect 4, an alfresco dinner in the plaza and catch-ups in the shade!

This week, Mr. Whippy made a special visit to Dewar Close in Rugby! 🍦

The 99 was the fan favourite among residents, with Joan calling hers “lovely jubbly” and Angus saying he hadn’t had one in years.

Home Manager Tara said, “Sometimes it’s the simple things that can bring smiles to everyone’s faces. We all really enjoyed our sweet treats - it was the perfect way to cool down on a warm day!”
