As we're heading into the final months of 2026, we wanted to highlight how our care teams have gone the extra mile (quite literally!) to raise money for their residents' funds. 🚶‍♀️🧗

Last month, the team at Sycamores put their best feet forward for a sponsored walk from their care home in Sydenham, Leamington Spa all the way to WCS's Woodside Care Village in Warwick. When they arrived, they were greeted by the Woodside team, who had well-earned drinks and snacks waiting for them. Their fantastic efforts raised over £185 for their residents' fund. 👏

And for the team at Mill Green in Rugby, Wellbeing Co-ordinator Rachel took their fundraising to new heights with friends and family by climbing the highest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis!

The group faced some gruelling conditions along the way, battling heavy rain, sleet, hail, snow and winds of 45mph with gusts reaching 60mph. 🥶🌧️

Despite the weather, they persevered and made it all the way to the summit, raising an incredible £1,090 for Mill Green's residents' fund. Reflecting on the achievement, Rachel shared: "We all had our challenges that we did our best to overcome on our hike but together, we got through it. Knowing we've raised this much money to benefit our residents makes this achievement even more special.

It makes every aching muscle, soaking-wet layer and freezing moment worth it! Thank you to my amazing team for the laughs, determination and encouragement and everyone who supported us through their donations."

A huge well done to the teams and thank you to everyone who supported them. The funds raised are being used to create opportunities for residents to keep doing the things they've always done and enjoy new experiences.

Tony, John and Richard from Westlands in Rugby were looking forward to a trip to Mini Meadows Farm and meeting the animals - so much so that Richard and John were ready and waiting for the Memory Maker minibus an hour early!

After picking up a bucket of animal feed, Richard took charge of working out which colour-coded pot was for each animal. Tony quickly took a liking to the guinea pigs and rabbits, while John enjoyed feeding the geese, sheep and llamas. 🪿🐑🦙

Towards the end of their stroll around the farm, they stopped off at the play area. Social Activities Manager Sherie and John couldn't resist having a go on the seesaw, while Tony and Richard sat back and enjoyed watching the pair have fun together.

Over at Drayton Court in Nuneaton, there's been a mix of activities and lots of laughs! Lenny enjoyed a relaxing spot of painting, while Angela stole the show during a classic game of 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘺 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵.

Then it was time to put Lifestyle Coach Tammy's trust in the residents to the test...with a cup balanced on her head! 🫣 Armed with a pool noodle and ball, they took aim and tried their best to knock the cup off - although Tammy reckons she ended up taking more hits than the target did. 🤣🎯

🎃🕸️ 𝙎𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙙𝙡𝙮 𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙞𝙧 𝙖𝙩 𝙒𝘾𝙎 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙚...

October has only just begun, but residents across WCS Care have found it 𝘦𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦-𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 getting into the spirit of Halloween, with work on some decorations starting a few weeks ago!

Over at Fairfield in Bedworth, the arts and crafts crew have been conjuring up all sorts of creations...

👻 𝗚𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 made out of pom-poms and pegs - no paranormal activity required
🍂 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 decorated with leaves, pinecones and berries, while some decided to give theirs a more traditional Halloween makeover 🎃
🧻 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲-𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀, mostly of the friendly variety. Beryl, however, was having none of that. She said hers 𝘩𝘢𝘥 to be spooky - it is Halloween after all 😂

They've also enjoyed getting their hands messy with balloons, newspaper, glue and papier-mâché, creating even more Halloween decorations to add to the collection. We can't wait to see how they turn out! 👀

Meanwhile, over at Drovers House in Rugby, residents have been having a 𝘨𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘥 time decorating wooden pumpkins, making paper versions and threading together themed ribbons to hang from their doors and little tree.

Mick, Jean, Satinder and Simran from Mill Green in Rugby recently set off in the Memory Maker minibus for a day by the sea. 🏖️

Their first stop was Fleetwood, near Blackpool, where they had a go on the beach buggies and took a stroll along the seafront. An acrobatic plane flying overhead caught their attention too - especially Satinder, who’s really into aircraft. ✈️

Before heading off, the group picked out some interesting rocks from the beach to take home with plans to paint and add them to their wildlife garden. From there, they travelled to Blackpool to round off their day with fish and chips and an ice cream. 🍟🍦

While looking out across the water, Jean smiled and said, “It’s been ages since I’ve seen the sea.” 💙

As we head into the autumn, we thought we'd look back at some of the work that took place in our gardens over the summer - and the stories behind them.

First up, Newlands’ story, told by Wellbeing Co-ordinator David…

“It all started with a large patch of grass.

I know, I know. Not the most exciting start to a story but stick with me. With 𝗡𝗼 𝗠𝗼𝘄 𝗠𝗮𝘆 around the corner, we looked at that patch one day and thought: '𝘞𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘥𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵.'

So, for May, we simply let it grow. Turns out convincing people 𝘯𝘰𝘵 to cut the grass was probably the easiest gardening job we’ve ever had! As it grew, bees and butterflies began making themselves at home, while residents joked that if it carried on much longer, they’d soon need a map to find their way through it.

But seeing that patch brought to life got us all looking at the rest of our outdoor space differently. Residents told us that they wanted somewhere different to spend time. So, they suggested changes to another area we didn't use very much. We tidied it up and made room for WCS Care’s Community Musicians to set up for our reggae concert, fired up the BBQ and added a hydration station too, because British summers can get 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘺 𝘩𝘰𝘵 sometimes!

Before long, that quiet corner was full of music, conversation and activity - including some…questionable dance moves from staff (I won’t name names). And with WCS Care’s 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗺 competition on the horizon, residents had plenty of ideas about what we could do next. They turned plastic bottle bottoms into flowers for their displays and old barrels were given a new lease of life as colourful planters.

Then a couple of Newlands’ ‘secret graffiti artists’ emerged! Don’t worry, it was all above board. They got their brushes out and painted the garden wall, creating the perfect backdrop for one of the ideas we bounced around: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗿 - a new spot for drinks, get-togethers and sunnier days.

We didn’t stop there, though. Some residents pointed out that they prefer spending time indoors, so we brought a bit of the garden inside for them, transforming our reception area with the sound of water inside.

In the end, spaces inside and outside the home had found a new purpose. And those old barrels that used to look dull as dishwater? They finished third in WCS Care’s 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝘀 competition!

We were chuffed to do so well. Sometimes, all it takes is a patch of grass to get things started.”

There's been plenty to talk about for residents at The Limes in Stratford-upon-Avon recently.

Collin from Wings of Freedom brought kestrels and owls to visit the home. Everyone loved seeing the birds up close, learning about them and even having a go at holding them.

Bobbie, who moved into The Limes a few months ago, said she’d never had an opportunity like it before and thought the birds were incredible. Marjorie, who was visiting her husband, joined in too and was surprised by how light they felt. 🦉

Then on Sunday, a few residents headed to a local garden centre for a look around and some lunch. They enjoyed watching the fish in the aquarium and browsing the plants, but it was the mince pies that made it home with them! Is it too soon to talk about Christmas? 🫣😄

WCS Care's 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 get-togethers bring residents from Fairfield (Bedworth), Attleborough Grange and Drayton Court (Nuneaton) together to catch up, try new experiences and, most importantly, have a good time.

They recently all met at The Griffin Inn in Nuneaton for an afternoon of good food and lots of laughs.

Everyone tucked into a delicious three-course meal. By the end of the second course, they were starting to feel full... but somehow, there was still room for dessert. 😄 Some went for triple ice cream, while others chose melt-in-the-middle chocolate pudding or cherry and apple crumble and they enjoyed every bit.

June from Attleborough Grange proved to be the quiz master of the afternoon, answering questions that left the rest of the group stumped. And the fun continued with bingo, where prizes ranged from free drinks and biscuits to a bottle of w**e. 🥂🍪

What a brilliant day at Galanos House in Southam. 💛

Castle Brook residents from Kenilworth received a warm welcome with tea, coffee and biscuits before kicking things off with a sports quiz, followed by a fencing session with a twist...pool noodles! 🤺

Roy had the room laughing when he slid his pool noodle onto his walking stick and took up his stance. During the session, Cynthia reminisced about her fencing days when she was younger.

Next up was crazy golf. As a long-standing member of Kenilworth Golf Club, Roy certainly knew his way around a putter - but he wasn't the only one! Maureen proved to be a natural too. Heather couldn't resist joining in the fun herself. ⛳

After working up an appetite, everyone got together for lunch at the community café. Full, happy and ready to head home with plenty of stories to share, the group thanked the team at Royal British Legion for such an enjoyable time.

Ewe wouldn't believe who visited Attleborough Grange in Nuneaton last week! 🐑

Graham the Sheep popped in with his owner, Donna, to spend time with residents, relatives and staff. Making their way around the home, Graham had a great time meeting everyone and enjoying plenty of fuss and attention - though the food and veg from residents may have been the real highlight of his day. 😄🥕

Lifestyle Coach Ruth said, "We all loved meeting him, it was brilliant. Thanks to Graham and Donna for stopping by and making our day."
