Meet Ethan Keable, Club Chair of Newbury Young Farmers in Berkshire Young Farmers !

Ethan leads a club of 64 members and shares his experience in the top job.

Q. How is your club structured?
We currently have joint club meetings for all members but take part in any county senior-only events.

Q. How does your club plan its programme and what's been one of your best meeting ideas?
Our club has an Advisory Committee that regularly meets and provides some great meeting ideas.

The best meeting idea we have had so far was to host a two-night county camp as a club. It was a brilliant social event for the clubs in the county and great memories were made.

Q. How does your club recruit and welcome new members?
We have gained members from Open Farm Sunday events as well as from membership enquiries that come through from our wonderfully efficient County Administrator Daisy.

We have also held a New Members’ Evening, and tried to increase our social media presence, which in turn, has resulted in quite a few membership enquiries. New members are welcomed by our fabulous leaders and the club officers.

Q. How do you balance your club duties with your personal/professional life?
I have two very supportive and active Vice-Chairs Lucy and Flo, which helps to share the load.

I try to keep my professional life separate as I am a builder, so tend to switch off after a day’s work and focus on club/county duties in the evenings.

Q. Tell us about a top skill you've developed through this role?
Leadership and networking have been key. I have met so many new people by completing the roles and have enjoyed building some great friendships through meetings and social events.

Q. What's a challenge you have faced as a young leader of a club and how did you overcome it?
Keeping the members interested has been a challenge when the club was smaller. We have built a varied and interesting programme now and we are busy. It is great to see the club growing in every way.

Q. What one tip would you give to others in a similar role to you?
Make sure you have a good team to support you, many hands make light work.

With warmer weather and heatwave conditions forecast across the country this week, it's important to review your club activities and events to help keep everyone safe while still having fun.

Before your meeting or event:

✅ Check the weather forecast and follow any official weather warnings or guidance.
✅ Review planned activities and consider adapting those that involve prolonged physical activity in the heat.
✅ Schedule extra refreshment breaks and make sure plenty of drinking water is available.
✅ Move outdoor activities into shaded areas where possible.
✅ If serving food or organising cookery sessions, ensure food can be stored safely and avoid foods that are higher risk in hot weather.

Remember to look at risk assessments for any planned activities to help ensure everyone enjoys a safe and successful YFC meeting, whatever the weather.

NFYFC has a full guide for club and county officers to support clubs and counties in hosting events and activities during extreme weather. See the link in our comments for information.

It's your weekly dose of YFC Friday Faves!

This week clubs have been inspired by the World Cup, learnt more about wool, cleared up their local community and enjoyed the sunshine with a game of cricket. Well done to all our club officers who have been hard at work making plans and ensuring everything runs without a hitch!

This week's top picks:

⚽ Henley Young Farmers are feeling the football hysteria already and decided to host their own footie match.

🧹 Rearsby Young Farmers Club rolled their sleeves up to help clear up their local church grounds.

🐑 Llanfyllin YFC taught their members – as well as others from nearby clubs – more about efficient wool handling with a masterclass.

🏏 dunmow.young.farmers made the most of the sunny weather to enjoy a game of cricket and rounders, followed by a BBQ.

Do you know an NFYFC member who could benefit from support with training costs?

The Worshipful Company of Farmers' Jubilee Scholarship Scheme offers **10 grants of up to £750** to help NFYFC members aged 18+ access agricultural training and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses.

This is a fantastic opportunity to support young people in developing new skills, gaining qualifications and advancing their careers within the agricultural industry.

Applications close at the end of June 2026, with successful applicants announced in July.

Please help us spread the word and encourage eligible members to apply before the deadline.

When St Columb Young Farmers Club in Cornwall YFC took part in the YFC Scarecrow Challenge last year for National Young Farmers' Week, their design caught the attention of our judge Matt Baker – and a load of new members!

Their winning scene, which showed how the club supported the community, was displayed outside a local shop and advertised their new members' night.

The club have taken part in previous National Young Farmers' Week challenges but Club Secretary Rachel Kingdon said this one worked the best in terms of bringing new faces to their new members' event.

"We had a bigger turn out to our new members' evening than we have had in years. It was a fun way to promote our new members' evening than the usual social media posts," said Rachel.

Get more inspiration for this year's scarecrow challenge, which has the theme of 'belonging' and find out how Rachel manages the role of Club Secretary in our weekly profile using the link in our comments.

Having the confidence to stand up and speak to a crowded room is something Will Grovestock from Hertfordshire Young Farmers learnt in YFC.

It’s a skill that helped him when he hurriedly needed to prepare a speech at the recent Annual Meeting of Clubs (AMC). Not only did he make the room laugh, he gave a convincing presentation that also impressed the judges of the Sydney Fawcett trophy.

The trophy is awarded every year to the person who gives the greatest contribution at the AMC.

Well done Will. We hope you’ve got better at swimming!
