Bee Friendly Kenilworth

Bee Friendly Kenilworth Bee Friendly Kenilworth started when a group of like minded people got together over Zoom in May 2020 to discuss biodiversity.

We want to increase biodiversity for all pollinators but thought bees were a good start. We attend events to spread the word. We want to build on the good work of existing local groups and are inspired by groups like Bee Friendly Monmouth and The Bee Friendly Trust. Our aims are
To improve the biodiversity of Kenilworth by making the town Bee Friendly - to include all pollinators. To campaign for

Kenilworth to become a 'Bee Town'. To form partnerships with other organisations which share our aims
To encourage people to have areas left wild in their gardens. To facilitate this by publishing lists of suitable plants and other gardening advice
To get support from WDC to allow people to 'take over' the verges outside their houses to allow wildflowers to grow, and to allow residents to volunteer to co-manage green spaces near their houses. To encourage local authorities to leave more wildflower areas on main roads, roundabouts etc. To promote No Mow May and other schemes to reduce mowing as promoted by Plantlife and other national charities
To engage with local schools to promote biodiversity. We need to consider consistent signage so are currently using the blue heart of the bluecampaignhub.com.

Great to be part of World Bee Day with Bee Friendly Kenilworth.

This annual UN designated day raises awareness of the vital role bees and pollinators play in ecosystems and food security, celebrating the birthday of Anton JanΕ‘a, a 18th-century beekeeping pioneer.

For World Bee Day 2026, the focus is on the theme, 'Bee Together for People and the Planet - A Partnership that Sustains us All.'

https://www.bbka.org.uk/national-event

We celebrated at Kenilworth Library (Warwickshire Library & Information Service), a perfect partnership during the National Year of Reading. Local author Julia Rawlinson also marked the first anniversary of her book 'Fletcher and the Bee'.

It was lovely to take part in Story Stomp with 'The Bumble Bear' being the sensible book of choice.

Then along to Kenilworth Books to engage with more book lovers!

I hope everyone else enjoyed World Bee Day and bee-haved themselves! πŸπŸ’›πŸ

Last week Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and Natural England published the Environment Act Habitat Target - Evidence Report 2026.
πŸ‘‡
naturalengland.blog.gov.uk/2026/05/15/a-shared-picture-of-progress-new-defra-and-natural-england-evidence-shows-77638-hectares-of-habitat-target-delivery/

πŸ“ˆThe report shows that action has been undertaken on 77,638 hectares to create or restore wildlife-rich habitat across England since January 2023, nearly double last year's reported figure.

🐝The update includes data from a wider range of Defra group partners and, for the first time, contributions from external organisations such as Buglife and the Newt Conservation Partnership.

πŸ“ŒTheir map within the Evidence Report, captures 139 hectares of our B-Lines habitat delivery between February 2023 and December 2025. Such a great showcase of our work!

Bees are amazing. Did you know there are more than 270 types of bee in the UK? They help grow one in every three bites of food we eat. Bees are a big part of nature and they need our help to survive. πŸ’›
