Cumbria Woodlands Our vision is for woodland in Cumbria to thrive ecologically and economically for the benefit of everyone

Our aim is for woodlands to be managed and improved in order for them to thrive and to be economically and ecologically sustainable so we can get the most from them.

We've been back out with , and this time they were joined by as we headed up the Duddon Valley to do some work at Hardknott.

We were working with .hardknott.forest , chopping some spruce, eating some cake and generally having a lovely time in the spring sunshine!

Thanks everyone for coming along!

New Case Study!

Brown Spring Coppice is a great site. It's got grass, it's got flowers, it's got some trees, it's ghost woodland, it has ancient semi-natural woodland next door...

So what do you do? What could you do? Should you do anything?

Let us know what you think!

Thanks to Ruth and Daniel for their input on this.

We were back out with and last month.

In the morning Angus took us into the rainforest to look at mosses and lichens, then Jamie got them on the tools for some Western Hemlock clearance in the afternoon. A grand combination of our rainforest and Paws projects in one day!

Thanks again to Working Class Heroes for their continued support.

A little glimpse into what happened on our rainforest workshop with Jo Clayton.

A day was spent in the woods looking at ways to get creative in the temperate rainforest.

Thanks to for all the photos!

Interested in GIS?... LIDAR?... Wood Pasture?

If yes, we have just the thing for you!

We have a free workshop coming on the 8th December run by Luke Steer all about getting an understanding of the application of LIDAR data when mapping trees and wood pasture.

Through a short workshop, attendees will begin to understand how to use LIDAR data in QGIS and apply this to their own work.

Our next rainforest event is a special one.

---Art from the Temperate Rainforest with Jo Clayton---

Join us for a day where we will connect to our temperate woodland through a collective creative expression.

When- Monday 10 November 2025 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Where- Great Lindeth Wood, Bouth, LA12 8JJ

The day will be delivered by Jo Clayton, supported by Clare de Villanueva and Angus Walsh.

Jo Clayton owns and cares for Great Lindeth Wood; an Ancient Broadleaf woodland in Bouth (Southern Lake District). Jo & her partner Darryl use the materials from their conservation work to make charcoal products & ornamental crafts. Jo creates art from nature & runs workshops in the woods.

We will be encouraging connection to the temperate rainforest through guided creative process. Practicing collectivity and connectivity as a community for the day, as we celebrate and learn about temperate rainforest together.

Are humans a keystone species in woodlands?

Join two humans (Mike Carswell and Clare de Villanueva) for a discussion about Craft, Culture and Ecology. We'll be digging into questions like the one above and others like...

-Are humans an essential habitat engineer in woodland?
-Why are our native woodlands often in ecologically poor condition?
-What is the link between the decline in coppicing and the decline in biodiversity?

This is a free webinar on the 3rd of Nov at 7pm.

Book online here- https://www.trybooking.com/uk/FLWA

New webinar incoming!

Culture, Craft and Ecology. Can we have it all?

Is there really a conflict between managing for cultural heritage and ecological heritage?

Join Mike Carswell and Clare de Villanueva on the 3rd November at 7pm (online) for a free webinar as they discuss the real and perceived conflicts between human impact and woodland ecology.

We have invited an experienced coppice worker, Mike Carswell to speak with us about the ancient method of coppicing (if coppicing is new to you, we will also introduce the history and methods).

We will explore the space between 'productive' woods and woods conserved for nature. We will also discuss considerations for managing for wood products in and near temperate rainforest.

Last week we dodged the worst of the storms to get out and visit Snaizeholme as part of our on going 'Delivery Forum' meet ups.

It was a pleasure to be taken round by Alec (site manager) and shown the works carried out so far on what the Woodland Trust describe as "one of the boldest habitat restoration projects in the English uplands".

Both the scale and ambition are impressive, especially when balancing the needs of birds, ground flora, rivers, fish, peatland, woodland creation, cattle/grazing, limestone pavements... the list goes on.

Once again, being able to visit a site as a group, and hear different perspectives and questions from attendees was really valuable.

Thanks to everyone who came, and Alec for showing us round.

You can find out more about Snaizeholme here https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/support-us/give/appeals/snaizeholme/
