On 7th May a small group of visitors from Provence in southern France arrived in Kendal to spend a week as guests of members of the two SLu3a French groups. They were here with their English teacher, both to practise their English and to explore our local landscape and culture. Blessed with largely dry, although chilly weather, everyone was able to undertake a wide range of local visits and activities including a visit to the mayor’s parlour in Kendal and a heritage walk around the town, a guided tour of Sizergh gardens and walks and visits in the Lake District. The group also ventured further afield and spent one day in Edinburgh. On the Monday afternoon, they kindly joined our French classes for an hour’s French conversation with group members, followed by afternoon tea which was much appreciated.

All in all, a very successful and enjoyable week for all concerned and the English hosts are now looking forward to taking up an invitation to visit Provence sometime next year .

Over 100 SLu3a members were treated to fascinating talk this morning at our Monthly General meeting, by David Hulme, Chief Rigger at Blackpool Tower. In a humorous and interesting presentation, David told us about the history of the 132 year old structure, how it is maintained and entertained us with stories from his career at the tower including some AI generated meetings which never took place, such as the tower developer meeting Mr Eiffel in Paris. An engaging and excellent presentation.
