We apologise for the long silence. Frustratingly, we are still awaiting a response from Westmorland & Furness Council (W&F) regarding the Community Asset Transfer (CAT) for the Busher Walk site.

Kendal CLT has had a long-standing interest in this site. Back in May 2023, we were encouraged by W&F’s indication that Busher Walk would be brought forward for disposal, and that Kendal CLT would be well placed to take it on for affordable housing development.

At that time, we were told the site would be released in September 2023. However, the process has since faced repeated delays. In late 2023, we were invited to submit a formal Expression of Interest—which we did promptly. Despite multiple follow-up emails, we have yet to receive any meaningful updates or next steps.

We understand the next stage of the CAT process involves submitting a full business plan. We are ready to do this in partnership with the Mountain Rescue Team, who are keen to co-develop the wider site with us. However, we urgently need W&F to move things forward so we can begin this next phase.

We’re grateful for the support we’ve received so far—including from the Cabinet leads for Housing and Assets, and from MP Tim Farron, who has recently written to the Council’s Chief Executive on our behalf to ask for clarity on the delays.

KCLT has committed to focusing our efforts on Busher Walk and is not pursuing alternative sites at this time, as we believe strongly that this location offers the best opportunity for the kind of affordable, community-led housing Kendal needs.

Apologies that we have been quiet in recent months, we have been patiently waiting for updates on our identified sites and we believe there is finally some progress on the Busher Walk site.

We would like to invite you all to our AGM on Monday the 30th of September, where we will update you on Busher Walk and share our annual report for 2023-2024.

The AGM will be held at the New Union pub in Kendal, 159 Stricklandgate, LA9 4RF at 7pm.

The New Union is very close to the site we hope to develop on Busher Walk, so as well as carrying out the usual business of an AGM, we will also offer a walk around of the site.

EXCITING UPDATE!

Next week we will be meeting once more with Westmorland & Furness officers to discuss our proposal for Busher Walk. We will also be joined by representatives of Kendal Mountain Rescue who currently lease a site on Busher Walk from W&F and who are also seeking to have the land transferred to them as a community asset transfer. Kendal CLT and Kendal Mountain Rescue Team are now working collaboratively in order to develop the wider site to meet both our aspirations, which will be a development of affordable, sustainable homes, alongside a new and improved mountain rescue centre. All indications from W&F in regards to our proposal are positive so far, so I hope to bring back an exciting announcement following this meeting. We have also been approached by the BBC who are keen to produce a show about community land trusts and want to support the development of an individual scheme.
