Arts Society Borders

Arts Society Borders For the promotion of fine and decorative arts. Monthly lectures September to June at Tait Hall Kelso. You would be made most welcome

All welcome, please contact [email protected] if you would like to learn more about joining Arts Society Borders. Welcome to our new page where we plan to keep members, friends, family and anyone with an interest in the arts up to date on all our current activities in the Borders and across the art world whether it be in paintings, music, sculpture, etc. Our aim is to share our enjoy

ment of the decorative and visual arts with like- minded folks. Our annual session begins in September and runs for 10 months until June of the following year. Our lectures are held on a Tuesday at the Tait Hall in Kelso starting at 10.30am and runs for about an hour. Coffee and tea are available prior to the talk from 9.45am. The lecturers themselves are specialists in their fields and have gone through rigorous accreditation to be included in The Art Society Directory of lecturers. Although we have our wonderful membership to whom the lectures are free, we do offer the opportunity to anyone who would like to come along for £10 per lecture. Twice a year we arrange several visits to places of significance and always try to include a visit to a garden for our many enthusiasts. Usually these visits allow members to bring guests but there is a charge for both members and guests for these trips. Once a year we run a Bridge Tea for our members and their friends which usually takes place either in October or November.

Acquired sometimes as diplomatic gifts, sometimes plunder, sometimes even by purchase or commission, these multifarious pieces came to represent not only backing for local currency, but to enhance the splendour/prestige of the court of which Augustus the Strong's is the premier example.

Our next lecture is on 3rd March, 2026 entitled:
'Winterhalter and Worth' with
Scott Schiavone.

German born Winterhalter painted the rich, powerful and fashionable courts of the 19th century Europe. English couturier Worth set up his salon in Paris in 1858 and soon became official couturier to the Empress Eugenie.
Though they may not have worked directly together, their shared list of clients meant that one depicted the finest and most luxurious fabrics in paint, and the other sculpted these fabrics into ethereal gowns for the elite, who were frequently painted in them
