Woodland Tribe

Woodland Tribe Woodland Tribe are a not for profit CIC promoting adventure play in the UK. For more information on what we do visit our website www.woodlandtribe.org

Imagine a UK where adventure play was as ingrained in the national consciousness as Quentin Blake’s beautiful illustrations. Where kids reclaiming community space and trusting them with risky play was as much part of the national imagination Blake’s drawings that, for us, capture the essence of an adventurous, slightly shonky childhood. Woodland Tribe are a not-for-profit social enterprise promot

ing adventure play in the UK. Bringing together the best ideas from playgrounds in the UK, Denmark, Germany, Japan, Woodland Tribe are revolutionising playtime. Our rallying cry: ‘build your own adventure playground!’. We give children and families hammers, saws, nails and a huge quantity of wood to build from scratch the playground of their dreams. Woodland Tribe started in 2014, after being commissioned by Shambala Festival to bring adventure play to kids in the festival field. We support existing adventure playgrounds, protecting valuable spaces that matter, as well as co-creating new play spaces in schools and exciting experiences at festivals. Woodland Tribe provide a broad mix of empowering ideas, community engagement, event management, infrastructure building, business and strategic knowledge.

Woodland Tribe are coming to Victoria and Albert Museum !!

🔨 This summer join us in the John Madejski Garden at V&A South Kensington for Play Build: The Mushroom Castle 🍄 🏰

Step into an unforgettable hands-on adventure where your imagination takes centre stage. Inspired by the work of Emily Stapleton-Jefferis, work together to design and build a giant mushroom castle using real tools, guided by our experienced facilitators.

Young builders will explore what they can create when given the freedom to experiment, problem-solve and collaborate. Using natural materials like wood and canvas, every child will contribute to a shared structure that grows and evolves throughout the day.

Children will also have the chance to dream up their own individual creations at a make and take station. Come join us for a celebration of play, making and discovery!

Tuesday 11th – Thursday 13th August
10.30am – 3.30pm

Sessions last for one hour. This is a FREE event for families, suitable for ages 5+ Booking is essential.

📢 Booking opens 9am TOMORROW Friday 12th June! Head to the V&A website or the link in our bio.

Sail this way because there’s only two days left of Playhenge! We’ve had a brilliant time so far seeing children’s ideas come to life with wood, nails, a bit of persistence and masses of imagination!
Don’t miss out on the chance to be part of this epic build - add to our replica Stonehenge, the house maze, marble run or floor is lava. Or get tinkering in the Make & Take area - we’ve seen racing cars, boats, hedgehogs and horses. What will you create?

Remains days: Thursday 28th & Friday 29th May
10.30am - 5.30pm
No extra cost - included in your admission to Stonehenge! (free to members)
No need to book, just come and find us during your visit.

Today is Outdoor Classroom Day!
At Woodland Tribe we have had the pleasure of designing and building outdoor play and learning spaces for schools, hosting build events for the whole school community, delivering hands-on workshops in schools and play training for forest school leaders, and we are currently developing a play area with Stanmer Wellbeing Gardens, to be enjoyed by visiting school groups. Children thrive outdoors and all the research shows that being in nature quite simply makes people happier. If you work in education, what steps can you take to spend more of the day outside?

This Mental Health Awareness Week we urge everybody to consider what happens when play is squeezed out of children’s lives. As we restrict children’s freedom and pile on the pressure for more structured activities (what Tim Gill refers to as the ‘shrinking horizons of childhood’) we increase the risk of play deprivation. The consequences of this can be severe, including an increased likelihood of depression, an inability to give and receive enjoyment, reduced independence, fear of the unknown and social isolation. So next time you hear play dismissed as time wasted, as unimportant, as “just play” know that children are actually engaging in something absolutely crucial to their present and future mental health! Time and space to play is one of the greatest gifts we can give to the younger generation, and time spent playing together is healing for ALL of us.

Check out the resources library on the Play Wales website to read more about the effects of play deprivation.
