Sallerton Wood We offer a range of tutor-led green woodworking courses and workshops to make products such as greenwood utensils, stools and chairs

10 acres of beautiful sustainably managed mixed deciduous woodland. Traditional management methods such as coppicing are practised, often with local community involvement. It is also a place of education for people interested in learning about traditional and sustainable woodland management methods, and the utilization of woodland timber to make craft products. Sallerton Wood offers a range of tutor-led green woodwork courses to make products such as spoons, spatulas, stools, and chairs.

The Sallerton Wood Craft Course season is well underway and the bluebells are looking stunning, alongside the flowering wood garlic, marsh marigolds and buttercups! Andy has already guided some really lovely groups in introductory woodworking skills and greenwood carving, with some very impressive results all round. We now look forward to the first Make a Shave Horse course of the year (one space remaining up for grabs in case anyone is interested!!) starting THIS SATURDAY.

We've spent much of the Easter break in the woodland, getting set for our summer course season. It's been true spring weather, often with 4 seasons in one day, but fortunately not too much rain this year! Yesterday saw the er****on of the new steaming shelter frame, which has been constructed by Andy entirely from Sallerton Wood timber. Tom proved himself very useful, particularly when it came to jumping up to fit the roof trusses!

A couple of days ago I mentioned that we collected these Wych elm seeds off the ground along the main track in the woods. They have now been sown into large pots just to see what we get, about 20 per pot. It really would be lovely to propogate our own Sallerton Wood Wych elms!

What a lot of wood; all cut to size, morticed and tenoned. Just need to remove the other shelter, prep' the ground (this one will be a slightly larger footprint than the previous shelter) and get it up now. Just a couple of weeks and counting before the courses begin, so no pressure!! Thanks enormously to Justin for once again helping out for the week, having his busman's holiday! We are very grateful.

Development Week update: The final truss of the new shelter frame is well underway and today Jane drove the quad bike under Andy's guidance to bring down some of the fresh hazel coppiced at the beginning of the week to complete a woven fence panel beside the kitchen shelter.

Tom has been busy projecting again and has started making his own ladder, with carved snake heads at the top of each vertical! The hazel rungs are drying in the hot box overnight.

We then collected wych elm seeds off the track which we will try planting. Did you know that the wych elm grows and releases its seed before even flowering?!

A very productive day in the woods yesterday. The woodland management team (Jane, Lesley and Mike) set to fixing 60 tree guards onto new larch and sweet cherry saplings. We then then went on to limb up the young chestnuts planted about 6 years ago. Just one more truss to go down in the workshop, with Andy and Justin busy framing the new steaming shelter.

We de-camped from home to the woods today to enjoy a few days of work and relaxation for our development week. Justin and Andy are making great progress on the new steaming shelter frame together and tomorrow we'll be joined by two more of our regular volunteers to fit tree guards on newly planted saplings and limb up established young trees to help them grow tall and straight. It's been a beautiful day!

With just one week remaining before the Easter weekend we're gearing up for our development week in the woods. The week (or more if needed) is spent getting Sallerton Wood s***k and span for the course season, often with the support of friends/volunteers. This year will see completion of the new steaming shelter frame and er****on of it, along with the usual jobs of applying preservative to all wooden structures, gates etc. and ensuring plenty of dry stove wood is available.

We're very much looking forward to our week in the woods and hope all those booked onto our courses for this year are too, whether for a one-day intro' or 6 days of chair-making!
