An exciting discovery? ✒️

While checking a cupboard at the top of the cellar stairs, the team uncovered something unexpected, faint writing on an old piece of panelling.

In the first image, you can see how it appears in normal light. In the second, we’ve used a strong angled light to help bring out the text, which we believe may have been written in chalk.

After checking our records, we’ve found no mention of this graffiti. We do hold records of other writing across the site, but not this - it could be a completely new discovery!

So far, we think it might read:
“January 6, 1765 milk for…”
…but the rest is still a mystery.

The lower fields will reopen on Thursday 21 May and the hall, gardens, tearoom and shop will reopen on Saturday 23 May.
