We are a voluntary youth organisation sponsored by the Royal Air Force and open to 12 - 17 year olds.

1701 (Johnstone) Sqn is a local air cadet unit in Johnstone. We offer flying, gliding, target shooting, sports, leadership and more to young people 12 - 17. If you are interested in joining please email [email protected] for more information.

What better activity to do on National Cadet Week - Air Experience Flying! ✈️

Today, four cadets from 1701 (Johnstone) Squadron enjoyed a brilliant day of Air Experience Flying at Glasgow Airport. Operating in the Grob Tutor, the RAF's trainer aircraft, our cadets had the unique chance to experience flight operations up close and gain hands-on piloting experience.

Experiences like these build vital confidence, leadership, and technical skills. Well done to all cadets involved, and thank you to the Adult Volunteers, ground staff and aircrew who made today possible!

✈️ An unforgettable day of aviation history and modern engineering for our cadets!

Yesterday, our cadets and Adult Volunteers had an incredible opportunity to visit Glasgow Airport and see the iconic Rolls-Royce PLC Spitfire up close.

A massive thank you to Rolls-Royce for extending this special invitation and sharing such an incredible piece of aviation heritage with our young people. 🇬🇧🔧

The excitement didn’t stop there! Huge thanks also go to Loganair for giving our cadets a rare, behind-the-scenes look inside a Loganair aircraft currently in for maintenance. Seeing the inner workings of a commercial airliner and meeting the skilled professionals who keep them flying was an inspiring experience they won't soon forget. ✈️🛠️

We are so grateful to both organisations for investing their time in the next generation of aviators and engineers!

Promotions & Appointments at 1701 (Johnstone) Squadron RAF Air Cadets! 🚀

We are thrilled to share some fantastic staff updates for 1701 (Johnstone) Squadron as we continue to grow and inspire our cadets.

CI Steven Price Appointed as Acting Sergeant
Please join us in welcoming Acting Sergeant Steven Price to his new role and to the Squadron! Steve brings a wealth of top-tier cadet experience to our team, having started his journey at 277 Blackwood Squadron - Royal Air Force Air Cadets Squadron.

During his time as a cadet, he achieved:
Rank: Cadet Warrant Officer
Awards & Badges: Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, RAF Marksman, Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet, and Gliding Proficiency
International Opportunities: Selected for the International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE) to Belgium
Recognition: Nominated for the prestigious Dacre Sword two years in a row.

Officer Commissioning: Flying Officer Connor Smith

We are also celebrating a huge milestone for one of our own! Connor began his journey right here as a cadet at 1701 (Johnstone) Squadron, rising through the ranks to Cadet Flight Sergeant before progressing into an Adult Volunteer role as Flight Sergeant, recently commissioning and being promoted to Flying Officer. During his cadet journey, he achieved:

Rank: Cadet Flight Sergeant
Classification: Master Air Cadet (the highest classification level)
Awards & Badges: Air Cadet Leadership Course (ACLC), Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Regional Marksman, and First Aid Qualification

Both of these appointments highlight the incredible pathway available in the RAF Air Cadets—from cadet achievements to adult leadership.

Huge congratulations to two of our outstanding cadets following their stellar performances at the West Scotland Wing Swimming Competition!

Cadet Dunlop: Took to the pool for her very first Wing competition and successfully completed her Swimming Proficiency! A fantastic achievement and a brilliant display of determination for her first major sporting event representing the Squadron. 👏

Cadet King: Put in a phenomenal performance, taking home Three Gold Medals and a Silver! 🥇gold 🥇 🥇 🥈 Thanks to this brilliant result, Cdt King will now go on to represent 1701 (Johnstone) Squadron and West Scotland Wing at the upcoming Regional Swimming Competition!

We welcomed Wing Commander Crawley to 1701 Squadron last week for our Annual Formal Inspection and we are incredibly proud to recognise two of our Adult Volunteers who received presentations during the visit.

🛫 A Look Behind the Scenes at Rolls-Royce plc Inchinnan

A massive thank you to Rolls-Royce PLC for hosting an incredible site visit for some of our cadets tonight! It’s not every day you get a front-row seat to the pinnacle of British engineering and innovation.

We were also delighted to share the experience with our colleagues from 2175 Rolls-Royce Squadron RAF Air Cadets. It was a fantastic opportunity for both squadrons to see first-hand how the subjects we study at the Squadron come to life in the real world from cutting-edge aerospace tech to world-class manufacturing.

Opportunities like these truly inspire the next generation of aviators and engineers.

Huge congratulations to our cadets for a busy and successful weekend! 🛫🏆

We had a fantastic result for 1701 (Johnstone) Squadron, with our team spreading out across the region to pick up new skills:

• Up in the Air: Two of our cadets headed to 661 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, RAF Kirknewton to take to the skies for a gliding session the first for them within their cadet career. There’s nothing quite like the view from the cockpit!

• Leading the Way: Meanwhile, one cadet was over at 1777 Dumbarton Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets completing their Bronze Leadership badge. A massive well done on leveling up those leadership skills!

It’s great to see our cadets making the most of every opportunity working through the progressive training syllabus. Whether it’s in the air or on the ground, the hard work is paying off!
