The Northumberland Masonic Demonstration Team

The Northumberland Masonic Demonstration Team Raising funds for Masonic and other Charities How we got started. The first performance was given in May 2008.

Team members got together in late 2007 in order to raise funds in support of the Province’s 2009 Festival for Girls and Boys by learning and demonstrating an early nineteenth century Masonic first degree ceremony. By the closing date of the Festival the team had given thirteen performances to Lodges and raised some £2,500 for the festival. Having achieved its original intentions the members decide

d to continue but to broaden its charitable fund raising to also include support for non-Masonic charities. The reputation of performance soon spread well beyond the Team’s own Province and visits have now been made to Lodges in Scotland, Durham, Yorkshire, Great Queen Street and
Northern Ireland plus invitations to Wales and to Cumberland & Westmorland. Having enhanced its repertoire to include a demonstration of a third degree many invitations have been received to return to Lodges who witnessed the first degree enactment.

The team had an enjoyable evening at Segedunum Lodge on Wednesday evening presenting & performing a first degree ceremony based in the year 1823. The team have been performing since 2008 and have delivered over 100 performances throughout the UK raising more than £30,000 for Masonic and small local charities. Our thanks to the brethren present for there generous charity contribution and to the lodge for there donation towards our endeavours to raise funds for local small charities.

W Bro Kevin Maughan on behalf of the Northumberland Masonic Demonstration Team recently presented a cheque for £150 to a very appreciative People’s Kitchen, Newcastle - who assured him that this generous donation will soon provide 30 hearty Christmas meals to homeless people in Newcastle.

The demonstration team visits lodges in the Province and beyond to reenact an authentic 1823 Ceremony-either Initiation or Raising. The Ceremony is both entertaining and instructive and through the generosity of Brethren always raises money for local charities.

The donation to the People’s Kitchen came from the proceeds of
a team visit on 14th November to the Lodge of Philosophy 6057 at Saltburn in the Province of North Yorkshire and East Ridings.

Further re-enactments are scheduled for March 2026.

Any Northumberland Freemasons interested in joining the Team are asked to contact the Secretary Tom Clifford on [email protected] and / or come to the next rehearsal at Fern Avenue Masonic Hall, Jesmond on Sunday 25th January 2026 at 10:00am

You will be made welcome and enjoy a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit as well as having some historical fun!!!

Celebrating old years night and New Year’s Day. Many years ago a Scottish highlander explained to me why he called today “old years night” not “new years eve”. Hogmanay (/ˈhɒɡməneɪ, ˌhɒɡməˈneɪ/ HOG-mə-nay, -NAY,[2] Scots: [ˌhɔɡməˈneː][3]) is the Scots word for the last day of the old year and is synonymous with the celebration of the New Year in the Scottish manner. It is normally followed by further celebration on the morning of New Year’s Day (1 January) and, in some cases, 2 January—a Scottish bank holiday. In a few contexts, the word Hogmanay is used more loosely to describe the entire period consisting of the last few days of the old year and the first few days of the new year.
A time to reflect on the last 365 days and think of happy memories good times and how to make those bad days we had better in 2026. What ever you call today have a happy and peaceful time.
Happy Hogmanay !!
