South Tyneside Autistic Forum

South Tyneside Autistic Forum A forum for autistics and their families to meet and exchange ideas and anecdotes. So, if it doesn't exist, create it. Fascinating.

As a recently diagnosed autistic adult it became clear to me that there wasn't a Tyneside based forum. Following a chance meeting with an autistic schoolboy it occurred to me that autistic children and adults not only have a mass of information to share, but also have a mass of unanswered questions. As an autistic myself I answered the boy's questions "What happens if something very hot meets some

thing very cold?" and went on to discuss time travel paradox and faster than light travel. I myself lie awake at night with questions such as "Who decided there would be eight notes in a musical scale and only six of the eight needs a sharp (or flat)?"

General information

The autism spectrum or autistic spectrum describes a range of conditions classified as pervasive developmental disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Pervasive developmental disorders include autism, Asperger syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), childhood disintegrative disorder, and Rett syndrome, although usually only the first three conditions are considered part of the autism spectrum.[1] These disorders are typically characterized by social deficits, communication difficulties, stereotyped or repetitive behaviors and interests, and in some cases, cognitive delays.
