🫛 Britain’s Dirty Protein Secret: Our Reliance on Imported Soya
🇬🇧 The UK likes to talk a good game on the environment.
⚠️ Actions speak louder than words.
In common with many of our environmental and climate targets; we outsource the damage.
Every year the UK imports around 3–3.5 million tonnes of soya — mainly from Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay — to feed pigs, poultry and cattle.
That soya alone is worth over £1.1 billion a year to the UK supply chain.
⁉️Why should we be concerned?
🌍 Most UK soya comes from regions linked to deforestation, including the Cerrado and parts of South America where native ecosystems are being cleared at scale.
🔥 Land-use change releases huge amounts of carbon, wipes out biodiversity and damages water systems.
🚢 It’s then shipped thousands of miles to feed livestock, and pretends the environmental cost doesn’t count.
📢Government, retailers and NGOs talk endlessly about “sustainable food”…
Yet remain silent on one of the single biggest environmental liabilities in UK food systems.
⚠️ If soya imports were suddenly banned, the UK feed industry would face around £1 billion a year in extra costs. That alone proves how dependent the system has become, it would be too great a shock for the livestock sector to absorb.
But still the blame is pushed back onto British farmers. The NFU have stated WE should meet net-zero by 2040
📌 UK farmers are told to cut emissions, reduce inputs and hit net-zero targets
📌Soya along with other non-assured cereals and other feedstocks are used for Red Trctor assured livestock, displacing domestic assured crops.
📌Supermarkets rely on the economies of imported feed including soya grown under standards UK farmers would never be allowed to use
⚠️This is not environmental leadership.
It’s carbon offshoring.
If the UK is serious about food security and the environment, we must:
👉Acknowledge the true impact of imported soya and adapt to phase it out.
👉Invest in home-grown protein crops urgently. Encourage the domestic production of proteins including development of tech and varieties of soya and lupins suited to the UK.
👉Stop holding UK farmers to higher standards while importing lower ones
🌎You can’t save the planet by ignoring what happens beyond our shores.
