Hedgerow Restoration - I just want to thank all those that attended our workshops over this last month. I do hope you enjoyed your time in our small corner of nature, and learnt a bit about hedgerows, their management and their role within our landscape. Your endeavours have extended the life expectancy of this neglected thin green line, enhanced its biodiversity and enabled this rural craft skill to survive that little bit longer. I’ve got a bit of tidy up job to do now, some of the brash will be worked back into the hedge line to thicken and add strength, some will be chipped and fed to our young orchard trees, some logs will join the firewood pile, whilst others will become habitat homes. I’ll keep you posted on its rejuvenation over the coming year and I hope you’ll get an opportunity to inspect your handy work and one of our future courses.

Lines Written in Early Spring
William Wordsworth, April 1798
*
I heard a thousand blended notes,
While in a grove I sate reclined,
In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts
Bring sad thoughts to the mind.
*
To her fair works did Nature link
The human soul that through me ran;
And much it grieved my heart to think
What man has made of man.
*
Through primrose tufts, in that green bower,
The periwinkle trailed its wreaths;
And ’tis my faith that every flower
Enjoys the air it breathes.
*
The birds around me hopped and played,
Their thoughts I cannot measure:—
But the least motion which they made
It seemed a thrill of pleasure.
*
The budding twigs spread out their fan,
To catch the breezy air;
And I must think, do all I can,
That there was pleasure there.
*
If this belief from heaven be sent,
If such be Nature’s holy plan,
Have I not reason to lament
What man has made of man?

Well done to all those who joined me for our Introduction to Coppicing Workshop yesterday. Hope you all enjoyed yourselves. I failed to take many photos, think I spent most of the time talking, but here’s a few. A bit of bank side crenellation, deadhedging, habitat piles and product selection.
