🎙️ “And it’s all happening here at WightOak Youth… the flags are going up, the homes are being decorated, and football fever has well and truly arrived!” ⚽🏆

The squad is ready. The fixtures are being watched. The footballs are pumped up and waiting on the touchline.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be backing our teams, watching the big games together, and fitting in as many kickabouts as possible.

The World Cup? It’s kicked off.

The excitement? Already in the back of the net. ⚽🥅

Recently some of our amazing young people had the opportunity to visit the Samaritans and meet some of their incredible call handlers.

They asked thoughtful, insightful questions and showed so much maturity, empathy and curiosity throughout the visit. We couldn’t be prouder of the way they represented themselves 💚

A huge thank you to everyone at Samaritans for taking the time to share what you do and for helping our young people understand the importance of listening, kindness and being there for others.

And a little reminder to anyone reading this: you don’t have to face things alone. If you ever need someone to talk to, Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can call 116 123 for free, or visit their website for support.

🌍💚 Small changes, big impact! 💚🌍

As part of our journey to become Plastic Free Champions with Surfers Against Sewage, we’re trialling more plastic-free options across our service. The movement encourages organisations and communities to reduce avoidable single-use plastic and make sustainable choices that create lasting change.

We’re starting with something simple but meaningful – our Young People’s Welcome Baskets. 🪥🧺

Working in consultation with our young people, we’ve introduced plastic-free essentials, including bamboo toothbrushes, flannels and baskets, helping to make everyday items a little kinder to the planet.

A huge thank you to our Sustainability Lead, Carl, for inspiring us all to think differently about the choices we make. 🌱👏

Mental Health Awareness Month may be coming to an end, but looking after our mental health is important all year round. 💚

Sometimes mental health is a bit like our Island’s red squirrels 🐿️

They’re small, quiet, and easy to miss when they’re struggling. But with the right environment, support, and care, they can thrive.

At Wightoak Youth, we know young people are the same. A little kindness, a safe space, and someone who listens can make a huge difference.

Check in with your friends, take time for yourself, and remember - you do not have to face things alone.

Fun isn’t just fun… it’s fun-da-mental! 🎮✨

In supported accommodation, moments of joy matter more than people realise. A trip to the arcade isn’t “just a game” - it’s confidence building, stress relief, social connection, laughter, and creating positive memories.

For young people who may have experienced trauma, instability, or isolation, having fun can be healing. It helps build trust, encourages friendships, and reminds them that they deserve happiness too. 💙

Sometimes the biggest progress happens in the smallest moments - sharing a laugh, winning a game, or simply feeling carefree for a while.

Because supporting young people isn’t only about providing a roof over their heads… it’s about helping them enjoy life and feel valued along the way. 🌟

💙 Mental health matters - every single day 💙

This month we are focusing on mental health awareness and the importance of supporting one another through everyday actions and conversations:

✨ Checking in with others
🤝 Staying connected
🏃 Being present
💬 Learning to “Ask Twice” when a friend may not seem themselves

Because sometimes “I’m okay” isn’t the full story...

A simple conversation, check-in, or act of kindness can make a huge difference to someone who may be struggling. Let’s continue encouraging open conversations and supporting young people to feel heard, valued, and supported. 💙

If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available - you are never alone.

Mental Health Awareness Week 💚

Mental health isn’t something we only think about when we’re struggling: it’s something we all need to look after every single day. Just like physical health, maintaining good mental wellbeing takes regular care, effort, and support.

A huge thank you to our wonderful Mental Health Lead, Jane, who organised Wellbeing Bingo for the Wightoak Team. From acts of self-care and mindfulness to getting outdoors, connecting with others, and taking time to recharge, it encouraged us all to prioritise our wellbeing in different ways 🌿✨

Some simple ways to support your mental health daily:

💚 Get outside for fresh air
💚 Stay connected with people you trust
💚 Take regular breaks and rest
💚 Move your body, even gently
💚 Practice gratitude or mindfulness
💚 Drink water and eat well
💚 Be kind to yourself
💚 Ask for support when you need it

Remember 👆Looking after your mental health is not a luxury, it’s essential.

Fresh air, football, and big smiles ⚽🌿

Our young people have been having a great time getting outside, enjoying the fresh air, and having a kickabout together. Activities like this are a great way to build confidence, stay active, and most importantly - have fun! 🙌

It’s amazing to see everyone encouraging each other and making positive memories together 💙

🌿 Wightoak Wisdom 🌿

“Real friends don’t pressure you, use you or make you feel unsafe.”

As we come to the end of Relationship Focus Month, this message is one we’ll keep coming back to with our young people.

Understanding what healthy relationships look like isn’t always easy, especially when boundaries can be tested. That’s why we work closely with our young people to help them recognise the signs of respect, trust and safety - and just as importantly, the signs when something isn’t right.

No one should feel pressured, used, or unsafe in any relationship.

Although this month has highlighted these conversations, our commitment doesn’t stop here. At Wightoak, we will continue supporting our young people to build confidence, set boundaries, and know their worth every single day.

🌟 Our Inspirational Care Leaver of the Month 🌟

At Wightoak Youth, we believe every young person deserves to see what’s possible beyond their circumstances. That’s why each month we highlight an Inspirational Care Leaver - someone who has experienced care but gone on to leave their mark on the world. 💫

This isn’t just about celebrating success. It’s about showing our young people that their past does not define their future. The challenges they’ve faced can become part of their strength, their story, and their journey forward.

✨ This month, we’re spotlighting Marilyn Monroe ✨

Before she became a global icon, Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson) experienced a difficult childhood in the care system. She spent much of her early life in foster homes and an orphanage, moving between placements and facing instability from a young age.

Despite these early challenges, she went on to become one of the most famous actresses in the world; known for her talent, resilience, and unforgettable presence in films like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Some Like It Hot. 🎬

Her story reminds us that even when life begins with uncertainty, it doesn’t limit where you can go. Strength, determination, and belief in yourself can open doors you never imagined.

💬 To our young people: your story is still being written, and your future is full of potential.
