Anglia Care Trust

Anglia Care Trust We are a charity providing services to vulnerable people in Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex. Advice, guidance and advocacy - helping people to be heard.

Founded in 1968, we support vulnerable people within the community providing housing services, domestic abuse services, drug and alcohol services, counseling and mediation, money and employment advice, to adults, children, and families. Our services can be categories as:
Community safety: working with male and female victims of domestic abuse and providing outreach, crisis and intensive support

along with advice and guidance on surrounding issues; alcohol recovery project
Housing services: helping vulnerable individuals to gain the necessary skills to maintain tenancies and live independently. We deliver housing services both on an independent basis and as part of a group of agencies working together and known as the SNAP Consortium. We provide money advice, employment advice; we run an Appropriate Adult scheme; we provide mentoring services and advocacy & Independent Visitor services and mediation services. We also part of the Ipswich Local Advice Partnership (ILAP), a partnership of 12 local agencies working together to improve the provision of advice for the people of Ipswich. We have 65 staff and around 100 volunteers - they are all amazing people, providing the best services and all of whom are dedicated to their work; our staff have taken part in many fundraising events to help provide extra services and we have created an Empowerment Fund to empower our service users to change their lives for the better. Grants are awarded for activities, training and support that’s proven to have a sustainable, long-term effect, and which can’t be gained elsewhere.

Last week, Gill, Co-ordinator for our Drug and Alcohol Service, attended Turning Point's ‘Partner Day’ alongside the newest members of our team.

Putting our service users is at the centre of everything we do which means that building strong partnerships with other organisations is an important part of our work. Events like this provide a valuable opportunity to connect with colleagues and partners across the sector, share knowledge and strengthen the networks that help us deliver the best possible support.

For our new starters, it was an excellent opportunity to meet key contacts and gain a better understanding of the services available.

Gill has said that “Partnership working is about more than organisations working alongside one another - it's about people building trust, sharing expertise and collaborating to make a positive difference in the lives of those we support.”

It’s Refugee Week and we wanted to share a story about a family we support …

Having fled a war-torn area in search of safety, the family moved into one of our homes on the outskirts of Lowestoft 2 years ago. They found village life challenging at first and felt isolated and far from local amenities, making it tricky to settle into their new surroundings.

Fast forward 2 years, and their story is one of determination and community.

The father now works in a local factory while continuing his English studies. Their eldest son balances work in a fish and chip shop with college and English language classes. The mother is also learning English, while the younger children are thriving at school. Their daughter has discovered a passion for dance and loves sharing news of her latest performances with us here at ACT.

Most importantly, they have built strong friendships with their neighbours and become valued members of their local community.

Aziza, who works in our Refugee Housing Service has said “Their story is a reminder that when people seeking refuge are welcomed and supported, they can rebuild their lives, achieve their goals and make meaningful contributions – putting back into their community.”

We are proud to work alongside families like this.

Our Community Connectors service is helping people feel less isolated and more connected to the communities around them.

Reflecting on the service’s journey, Jodie said:

"My favourite thing about Community Connectors is watching the service grow and develop over the years. We started by providing telephone support to people who were isolated at home, and now we're able to offer face-to-face and community-based support too. Seeing the difference this makes in people's lives is incredibly rewarding."

Community Connectors continues to make a real difference - and its impact keeps growing. If you would like to join the service as a volunteer, contact us on 01473 622888 or [email protected] to have a chat about what this support looks like.

Last week, we welcomed our partners Turning Point to talk about their Affected Others Service and the difference it's making for family members, carers and loved ones impacted by someone else's substance use.

They told us about the support available and how easy it is to access. Individuals can self-refer directly to the service. Importantly, there is no requirement for the person causing concern to be receiving support from Turning Point themselves – the service is available to anyone affected by someone else's substance use.

Thank you to Turning Point for sharing this valuable resource with our team.

If you need support, you can self-refer by calling 0300 123 0872. You'll speak directly with a member of their team, who can discuss your needs and explain the support options available to you.

Today is World Caring Day — a reminder that care is shown through action.

For children in care, Independent Visiting plays a vital role. It gives them a trusted, independent adult who can listen, support and ensure they feel heard.

As Anglia Care Trust volunteer Sue Spinks says:

“I love volunteering as an Independent Visitor, it is very rewarding and creates space for honest conversations, helps children express their wishes and feelings freely and ensures someone is consistently focused on their voice, experiences and wellbeing. It’s not about replacing anyone - it’s about strengthening the support network around a child. Independent Visitors can help build confidence, reduce isolation and make sure children know they are being heard, especially when life feels uncertain or decisions are being made about their future.”

We are grateful to Sue and our team of volunteers that play a crucial part in delivering this service.

As Volunteers’ Week comes to a close, we want to celebrate another group of people who give their time voluntarily to support the organisation – our Trustees.

Sara Stafford, both a Trustee and Independent Visitor for ACT, has said that “being on the Board of Trustees, having the opportunity to work with a dedicated team making a real difference in the community, is an honour."

We want to say a big thank you to all of our Trustees – we are so grateful for their continued dedication, guidance and leadership.

Our Volunteers time, patience and compassion makes a real difference to the services we deliver. They support people who are often facing some of the most difficult and overwhelming moments in their lives and they do so with empathy, care and sensitivity. That is not something to be taken for granted.

They play such an important role for us that we want them to feel part of the team. Last week, our Money Advice Team hosted a team meeting and invited their incredible volunteers in to share in the latest updates. It was a valuable opportunity to connect, stay informed and continue strengthening the support they offer as a team. These sessions are an important reminder of just how central volunteers are to the work we do.

Mike, our Money Advice Co-ordinator said, “We are continually impressed by the way our volunteers go the extra mile for people in distress - they listen without judgement and help guide them through complex and often daunting situations providing a safe environment for people to share their situation and work through their problems.”
