Ipswich Community Media

Ipswich Community Media Supporting our community through learning, volunteering and media. You can support our work at justgiving.com/campaign/ipswichcm

Ipswich Community Media was launched in 2015 by a group of people with a shared vision to serve the local community through music, media, the creative arts and language learning. ICM’s focus is rooted in a deep belief in fairness and social justice to work with those at the very margins of society to make Ipswich a better place for all. All of our offerings are free at the point of access because

we passionately believe that open access for the most disadvantaged in our community is vital for a healthy inclusive society. We are based just off Norwich Road in Ipswich, one of the most diverse and exciting areas of our town. It is also an area with many challenges, as Westgate Ward is one of the most deprived wards in the country. But with around a third of local residents from migrant and refugee communities we are proud to be part of such a diverse neighbourhood.

Meet our charity trustee Alessandra!

Alessandra has always been passionate about tackling discrimination and inequality, and she has a strong sense of justice.

She moved to the UK in 2014 with the goal of working within the voluntary and charity sector, which she has been part of since 2017. She has a strong interest in working with data and understanding the impact of services. She values how data can demonstrate the difference support makes, help tell meaningful stories, and inform decisions that strengthen services and outcomes to better meet people’s needs.

Inspired by her experience in the sector, her personal values, and a desire to support a diverse and growing multicultural community, she joined the board of trustees at ICM. As a trustee, she is committed to supporting the organisation’s vision and ensuring it continues to make a meaningful difference locally.

In her spare time, she enjoys walks in the park, visiting local cafés, always keeping a book in her bag.

🏳️‍🌈 Happy Pride Month from Ipswich Community Media 🏳️‍⚧️

Pride is a celebration of LGBTQ+ communities, but it’s also a chance to reflect, learn, stand together and continue the work of building a more inclusive society.

At ICM, we believe diversity strengthens our communities and enriches our lives.

Through our community media projects, creative and learning programmes and partnerships, we’re committed to creating welcoming spaces where people can share their stories, connect with others and thrive.

We’ve put together a blog exploring why Pride still matters, what inclusion means to us, local LGBTQ+ support organisations, and some of the fantastic Pride events happening across Suffolk this month with .

Meet Eric.

Eric is a long-standing ICM volunteer, having started as an ESOL learner himself, he now confidently supports students during lessons, provides Polish translations in his community and is one half of ICM’s dynamic events duo representing ICM at community events.

Eric regularly contributes to strategy discussions at Away Days, project development and Co-production workshops in key areas like ICM’s Westgate Wellbeing strategy.

He says that his favourite things about volunteering with ICM are "spending time with people, meet new people, helping others" and reflects that “from my heart, I feel that ICM is like a second family to me”.

No matter who you are or where you come from we believe that anyone can be a volunteer.

ICM volunteers come from all age-groups and all walks of life. Young people and adults, people of different genders, people from different communities of interest and ethnicity.

Our ICM volunteers give refugees and migrants a voice, support young people to grow their confidence through music and creativity, helping ICM to reach more people by joining us for community events, and much more!

We had a fantastic workshop with year 7 students from Westbourne High School earlier this year as part of our Youth Voices Matters project.

The session revealed some fascinating insights about life in Maple Park, find out more in this great article by project partners Ipswich.co.uk

Our Community Champions are a unique blend of current or previous ESOL learners, embedded in their local communities, bringing their voices and diverse needs to ICM’s strategy discussions and project development.

An invaluable bridge connecting local people with decision-makers and meeting the needs of their neighbours through collaboration with local GP surgeries, health providers and decision-makers.
