Members of peer groups travelled from the West to Ipswich to visit the Beyond Labels: Celebrating Disability in Suffolk exhibition at The Hold.
Aaron, a former peer support member now working as a learning centre administrator, shared:
“The St Audry’s exhibit at The Hold was thought provoking. The narrative was largely presented through the lens of doctors and other staff, which limited insight into patients’ own lived experiences. However, for its time, St Audry’s appeared more holistic and patient focused than other hospitals such as St Clements, which seemed more rigid and reflective of the prevailing practices of the era. From a disability perspective, the absence of patient voices was noticeable, even if understandable given the historical context. Overall, it was a positive experience to attend as someone with ASD and ADHD alongside the peer group. Opportunities like this are valuable in encouraging discussion and reflection on disability history and help bring people together through shared understanding. Many thanks to Emma and Ryan for arranging such an interesting visit”
We all enjoyed our first visit to The Hold, then finished the day with a drink by the waterfront in the sunshine before heading back to Bury by train.
