Following on from our earlier post, we have started the work on the river bank to manage the erosion near the Osprey Village bridge. We had the opportunity to harvest some suitable willow from a local site last week and earlier this week a couple of our volunteers started to put the willow spiling in place. Willow stakes are driven into the edge of the riverbed and then thin pieces are woven between them. The stakes will develop roots and start growing which will help stabilise the bank and help trap silt behind the structure. We will be doing more, provided the water levels are not too high in the coming weeks.

We had some comments on our previous post asking why we don't just move the path, create a new channel for the river or modify the bridge. All of these could work, but would need considerable amounts of money to fund them, moving the path might only last a few more years and before modifying river channels requires extensive modeling to make sure it would be appropriate and not cause other issues.

The park is managed by the community through a charity (SCIO) in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council and does not have large financial resources, funding for projects is generally from grants, donations or other fundraising This area is an active flood plain as we all know, SEPA do not allow works that could change the potential flood capacity or water flows. What we are doing is only costing volunteer time, uses local and sustainable materials, is a sustainable traditional management technique and can be delivered in a short timescale.

Regular visitors to the Park may have noticed that the riverbank on the Park side of the Osprey Village bridge has been eroding towards the path over the last two to three years. Whilst this is a natural process, where the river course is continually moving, we are concerned that if left to these processes, we could lose the path into the river in the next few years. Around two meters of bank between the river and the path have been lost in the last couple of years, leaving may be three meters before the river gets to the path.

We have been considering several options to overcome this:-

1. Install large boulders in the river to protect the bank
2. Drive willow stakes into the riverbed at the edge of the bank and weave thin willow stems between them. Willow brash will also be placed behind the barrier The willows will root and grow; the roots will stabilise the bank and the woven material helps to trap silt behind the barrier.
3. Drive willow stakes into the riverbank about 1m from the edge. The willow will root and the roots will help to stabilise the bank and bind the bank together.
4. Do nothing, this would risk losing the path from the bridge in the near future.

We are looking to take forward a combination of options 2 and 3 as this is the most sustainable approach, can be delivered with volunteers and will use locally source willow material.

Important Notice: Saturday 13th/ Sunday 14th JUNE

Inverurie Angling Association is hosting the next SNFFL heat, with anglers from across Scotland fishing on the IAA Rivers Don and Urie. To help fully accommodate this event, they would kindly ask permit holders to refrain from fishing the Burgh waters (Don and Ury all sections) from 1700 hours on Saturday 13 June until 1700 hours on Sunday 14 June 2026.

This competition presents an excellent opportunity for anglers and spectators of all ages, to observe some of Scotland’s finest river trout anglers in action, and we hope it will be an enjoyable occasion for the local angling community.

Inverurie Angling Association and SNFFL Organisers appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Following on from our recent post about the leaning posts, we've now completed the installation of the leaning posts, bike rack and buddy bench at Ury Riverside Park.

The leaning posts are designed as a resting point for people who may find it difficult or uncomfortable to sit down and get back up again. They provide support while standing and can be a useful alternative to a traditional bench.

The new bike rack gives cyclists a convenient place to secure their bikes while enjoying the park, and the buddy bench is there to encourage conversation and connection, helping people feel welcome and included.

We hope these additions make the park even more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

As the weather this spring has not been great, up until the last week or so, we have decided to extend the deadline for submitting photos for our Ury Riverside Park Calendar 2027. You can now enter up until 30 June 2026! All the same requirements as before.

You may have been wondering what these are 👀

Our new leaning posts have now been installed at Ury Riverside Park and will be available for use very soon once the fencing is removed.

Leaning posts provide a comfortable place to pause and rest without needing to fully sit down, offering additional support for those who may find sitting and standing difficult.

Also coming soon:
🌿 A buddy bench
🚲 New bike racks

Small additions that will help make the park more welcoming, accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Whilst Graeme from was out cutting the grass around the play area and parkrun finish area this week, he left us some 'grass art' Thanks Graeme for adding some artwork to the park! What will he do next!!

Thanks to Bennachie Horizon for litter picking at Ury Riverside Park earlier this month. A great job done though it is a shame people drop the litter in the first place!

🧹 URY Riverside Park SCIO & GIBC Litter Picking 🧹

It’s always a good sign when there’s less to pick up.

The team chose to head back to Ury Riverside Park this morning, and it didn’t take long to notice the difference. There was far less litter than before, which says a lot about the effort going in from others as well.

After lunch, we kept things going with a visit to Garioch Indoor Bowling Centre, where the same story continued, cleaner, tidier, and well looked after.

We even bumped into a friend who wanted to give it a try. She quickly got the hang of it and spotting bits most people would walk straight past.

Small actions, but they all add up, and it’s clear the work (ours and others) is making a real difference 💜💚💛
