Dunain Community Woods

We had 12 people on our Nature Walk on Sunday led by John Orr High Life Highland Countryside Rangers and supported by Jonathan and David two of our trustees! All went really well apart from the heavy rain at the end and we collected a total of £37 in donations from this and the bat walk, which were part of the Highlands & Islands Climate Festival.

We found a carved leaf on a beech tree near the play park no one had noticed before - if anyone knows when or why it was done please do let us know! It must have been done some years ago.

Thanks to everyone who came to out bat and moth walk on Thursday - we saw pipistrelle bats and lots of moths! If you didn't make it the session was recorded and John Orr from High Life Highland Countryside Rangers will be on BBC Radio Scotland Out of Doors next Saturday 26th September or on BBC Sounds. Thanks to Highlands & Islands Climate Festival for support.

Huge thanks to our artists Susan McCreevy Artist and Heather Afrin Art for the restoration of the mural, which is now complete! The Monday volunteers will be varnishing it to help keep it in good condition as long as possible.

Thank you to everyone that came to our AGM last Sunday! It was a great turnout, and a lot of effort was made to clear the gorse and bracken around the chambered cairn.

A special thanks to our small group of trustees that organise and run all the monthly events alongside the Monday Volunteers who do weekly maintenance so the community can enjoy the woodland.

We're always looking for more volunteers and trustees, so if you're interested in giving back to this special place along with a fantastic group of people, get in touch!

Jonathan, a trustee and Monday volunteer showed some of the members of the other Inverness community woodlands around Dunain on Tuesday evening. Despite the damp and misty weather they were impressed with the range and variety of our different habitats, trees and features of interest.

After the tree clearance earlier this summer, some further felling has been undertaken to try and clear the footpath up to the open areas and McGruer's pond from the duck pond at the back of Bishop's View.

It’s not ideal, but a route has been formed that can be taken with care as shown in the video. Please take care if using this route and be aware that this is not a maintained footpath.

🌟 The mural is getting restored🌟

We are very grateful to have received funding from the Highland Council Inverness West Ward Discretionary fund to repair and restore the woodland mural!

Starting this week, volunteers will begin the reparations by sanding down the peeling paint and varnish ready for repainting.

The original artists, Heather Afrin and Susan McCreevy, will return to repaint and restore the damaged areas to the mural with some panels needing completely replaced. Once complete, volunteers will revarnish the front and back of the mural to maintain it for as long as possible.
