The Highland Archive Centre is a great resource for anyone wanting to find out more about the heritage, and the built environment, of Inverness. They hold documents such as Valuation Rolls, which record details of properties, local government records, and privately-deposited collections such as estate papers, maps and plans, and business records. Some of their records are accessible remotely, and the popular online “Learn With Lorna” series highlights their collections – Lorna is in the news today:

Online series on Highland history becomes unlikely global hit with viewers from seven continents

Previously, open-air markets had been held at the Exchange outside the Town House, but the invention and spread of gas-lighting meant that an indoor market, open longer hours, could improve the shopping experience for Invernessians.

The Inverness Courier reported “The frontage to Academy Street is tastefully designed…” – a feature the Inverness City Heritage Trust restored in 2021.
