The opening peal on the bells at St Andrews Cathedral in Inverness was rung on this day in 1869.

Starting at 9.35am, members of the Ancient Society of College Youths from London took 3 hours and 14 minutes to ring the 5184 changes of a peal known as ‘Treble Bob Major’ or ‘The True Peal of Kent’. It was the first time a peal in this method had been run in Scotland.
It took about twenty more years for a local team of bellringers to be set up.

Nowadays, people in Inverness can hear the bellringers practise on Thursday nights, and, of course, can hear the bells ring each Sunday morning.

The Cathedral was designed by Inverness architect Alexander Ross.

On this day in 1921 members of the British Cabinet met in Inverness Town House for what was the first ever Cabinet meeting held outside London. The emergency meeting to discuss the situation in Ireland was held in Inverness because Prime Minister David Lloyd George was holidaying in Gairloch. The King, George V, was also on holiday in the north of Scotland. Other Cabinet ministers arrived on the train from London, and large crowds gathered outside the Town House to see them.

Inverness Town House is a striking building in Victorian Gothic style. It was designed by William Lawrie, and formally opened in January 1882. The council chamber was remodelled in 1894, and stained glass windows added to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1898. The building was extended in 1907. In 2018, a major two-year refurbishment of the main frontage of the building was completed.
