This morning at our Inverness garage, something really special happened… and it’s exactly what makes Highland & Islands Blood Bikes who we are.

It wasn’t a blue-light run.

It wasn’t a high-pressure delivery.

It was simply our volunteers coming together — coffee, cake, conversation, and connection ☕🍰

Because this is our USP.

Not vehicles.

Not equipment.

Not even the incredible service we provide.

It’s our people.

Our volunteers give their time, their energy, and their commitment to support the NHS and communities across the Highlands and Islands — often quietly, without recognition, but always with purpose.

Moments like this morning matter. They build relationships, strengthen our team, and remind us that behind every urgent delivery is a group of people who care deeply about what we do.

Behind every mile is a patient waiting.

Behind every job is a volunteer who said “yes”.

In February, our team completed 101 urgent jobs, travelling 8,483 miles to deliver blood samples, donor milk and more across our region.

We’re endlessly proud of this team and grateful for the community that stands with us.

💙 This is what we do – day and night. 💙

Yesterday perfectly captures the impact of Highland & Islands Blood Bikes and the incredible volunteers who make it happen.

In one afternoon and evening, six vital jobs were completed — most of them urgent, time-critical requests supporting patient care across the Highlands.

When a late-night call came in for urgent medication that needed to reach a patient in Lochinver, our volunteers didn’t hesitate.

The medication was collected from hospital in the evening and delivered safely to the patient in the early hours of the morning — ensuring care was not delayed when it mattered most.

Behind the scenes, our volunteer Controller on Duty carefully tracked the journey to make sure everything was done safely, professionally and with patient care at the heart of every decision.

Safe, reliable transport of blood, samples and medication

Volunteers giving their time, evenings and nights to help others

🚨 Moments like this highlight why afternoon and evening volunteer cover is so vital — because illness doesn’t stop at 5pm, and neither do we.
