It’s the final day of and we would like to take a moment to thank all volunteers whether that’s volunteering for us or for other amazing charities and organisations. Without you we wouldn’t be able to function 🩵
We have a very special one to finish off the week, Duncan is celebrating 5️⃣0️⃣ years with HHR!
The year 2026 is a very special year for me regarding Highland Hospital Radio as it marks 50 years of me being a volunteer member of the service.
I can honestly say I have really enjoyed the past and look forward to playing music for the patients for many years to come. There have been and still are a lot of excellent volunteers involved with the Service.
When I started all those years ago, one of our Life Presidents, Donnie Aird, taught me to be a Technical Operator and I was let loose on the patients on a show called Anything Goes with a lovely lady called Jenny Drummond. Basically, Jenny selected all the music, and I lined it up and played it every Monday afternoon from 3-4pm. I had a half day on a Monday afternoon from work, so I got stuck in.
After a few years, a reorganisation of the service took place and Jenny's show moved to a Monday night. I stayed with Jenny but was allowed to begin my very own show on a Monday afternoon and "Bedrock" was born and still is going strong today.
I, eventually, moved to Monday evening , when Jennie retired from the Service and my show is on from 7-8pm.
Highland Hospital Radio has evolved massively over the years I have been volunteering and we now have an app anyone can download and listen to HHR. We also have our own website hhr.scot, with lots of information concerning the Service. Before that you had to be a patient in hospital to listen to the music.
The part of the volunteering that I like more than anything is the fact we are there to brighten up a patient's day by playing them some music that means something to them and raise their spirits.
