Our goal is to become the ‘go to’ charity known for improving the lives of families living in the Highlands; by giving you confidence, empowering you to know your rights, know what questions to ask and have your voices heard. We are funded by the Highland Council to provide an independent information, advice and support service for families with children (up to age 25) with additional support needs, and the professionals working with them.

MEET THE TEAM - CARRIE WATTS 💙

Carrie is one of our Family Support Workers and brings a unique blend of professional experience, personal insight, and compassion to her role.

Originally from the United States, Carrie began her career in children's publishing in Manhattan, driven by a passion for helping meaningful, life-changing books find their way into the hands of readers. When she moved to Inverness with her husband, publishing may have been left behind, but her love of words, stories, and helping people remained.

Today, Carrie uses those passions to support young people and their families with their educational and emotional wellbeing. She understands the power of feeling heard, understood, and supported, and works alongside families to help them navigate challenges and celebrate strengths.

Following the diagnoses of her two children, Carrie was diagnosed as autistic at the age of 42. This lived experience gives her a valuable perspective on the importance of recognising and supporting each person's individual needs, while also understanding the realities of being a parent carer.

Labels can sometimes help us access support, understand ourselves, or explain our experiences. But they never tell the whole story.

Every person is unique, with their own strengths, interests, dreams, challenges, and personality. No diagnosis, circumstance, or label can fully define who someone is.

At Thriving Families, we believe in seeing the whole person and celebrating individuality. Whether you're a child, young person, parent, carer, or family member, your value goes far beyond any label.

✨ Be curious, not judgmental.
✨ Celebrate strengths.
✨ See the person before the label.

What is something about you that a label could never capture?

We’re delighted to be running Early Positive Approaches to Support (E-PAtS) — a welcoming 7-week programme for families of children aged 0–8 with additional support needs (diagnosed or undiagnosed). 💚

Our current programme is already underway, however we would still encourage families to get in touch if they are interested in taking part in a future group. We are creating a provisional interest list and will keep families updated when dates for the next programme become available.

✨ Connect with other families
✨ Share experiences in a supportive, understanding space
✨ Learn practical strategies for everyday life
✨ Support with sleep, communication, behaviour, and self-care
✨ Tea, coffee & refreshments included

Sometimes the biggest step is simply knowing there’s a room full of people who understand. 🌿
