Auchindrain Township

Auchindrain Township Auchindrain is a living testament to Scotland’s rural heritage. This remarkably preserved township offers a unique glimpse into Scotland’s past.

A museum since 1964, Auchindrain provides an opportunity to explore and connect with our shared history. Bail’ Ach’ an Droighinn, better known as Auchindrain Township, sits somewhere between modern Inverary and the Iron Age, a unique survival unchanged since the infamous Highland Clearances which saw thousands of Scots scattered worldwide. Auchindrain, an historic township near Inveraray, Argyll,

is as important to Scottish history as Skara Brae in Orkney, Culloden or any of the country’s great castles. Here, preserved lovingly, is Scotland’s real history. No tales here of castles and kings, this is Scotland’s past in all its raw intensity.

A wee update from Auchindrain 🌾

After several months with us, the tearoom has now finished its time here at the Township. We’re grateful for the refreshments and welcome it offered our visitors, and we wish them all the very best.

The township remains open 7 days a week as usual, and visitors are warmly welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy it onsite. Hot and cold drinks are still available from the Visitor Centre. We’re taking this as a chance to plan something special for our catering in the seasons ahead — watch this space.

As ever, thank you for your support. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

If you’ve visited Auchindrain over the last couple of years, you will have noticed a large sheet or tarpaulin covering the roof of the Bull & Wool House.

The Bull & Wool House was a communal building, shared by the people of the township and was used for housing the townships bull and also the fleeces of clipped wool from the sheep.

It was also where the young people of the township would ‘hang out’ away from the adults. Many of them wrote their names in keel on the beams of the roof inside. The tarpaulin is in place to make sure we don’t lose the graffiti as they are important piece of the buildings history.
