🎨Artist Spotlight: Xisha Angelova

This year at the Beyond Borders International Festival 2025, we are proud to showcase Martyrology of Belarus by Belarusian artist and former 1325 Women in Conflict Fellow, Xisha Angelova.

Since 2020, Xisha has painted over 1,100 portraits of Belarusian political prisoners, exhibited across Europe, including at St John’s Church, Edinburgh.

Her new installation takes shape within the Traquair House maze, drawing from Greek mythology to reimagine dictatorship as the Minotaur, freedom as Theseus, and Ariadne’s thread as a metaphor for humanity amid violence and oppression.

You will encounter over 200 portraits and life-size works in this immersive journey through resistance, and liberation.
