Message for all the men in the Ilminster area!!

Prostate Cancer! - Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing?
Is there a need? What would be the attendance?
When you can be told that you have prostate cancer even when not experiencing any symptoms, this can be a real problem for us men. So, I’ve been thinking what members of the Rotary Club of Ilminster could do to spur men in our area aged 40 plus into getting themselves checked.
According to the Somerset Prostate Support Association:
The NHS does not have a routine national screening programme for prostate cancer, albeit that you can request a PSA blood test free through your GP if you have urinary symptoms or concerns.
Most men I suspect will not bother or don’t have the time, so if the Rotary Club of Ilminster was to organise a day, thinking of a Saturday, when you could just book a test and walk in would you be prepared to take part? This could not be done for free; there would be a charge but it would be less than £30. I think your life’s wellbeing and future peace of mind is well worth far more than that but I could be proved wrong! Responses from wives and partners welcomed. Would you encourage him to take part?
If you like the idea of this as an opportunity and would support, please like this post. Alternatively you could just send me a message to register an interest.

We believe that the community of Ilminster has a deep desire for service. People here want to help, participate and belong to something meaningful.

The Rotary Club of Ilminster offers a welcoming, open and safe place for you to be able to do that. Our “kept short” meetings at the Shrubbery Hotel are held on the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of the month. We usually meet at 6:00pm in order to start the meeting at 6:30pm and aim to end by 7:30pm.

Please come and talk to us about opportunities and ideas of how you can get involved. All are welcome and there is no pressure: you can do as much or as little as you wish.

During President Kirsty Hughes’s 2021/2022 Rotary year, the members of the Rotary Club of Ilminster thought that it would be a lovely idea to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2022 by donating to Ilminster a Platinum Jubilee town clock. Sadly Kirsty died before this project could be completed. The club suffered many setbacks over the next three years with this project, with things not being planned well resulting in problems falling into the ‘too difficult basket’ and all this compounded with members leaving or moving away.

The 1st July 2025 saw the start of the revitalisation of the Rotary Club of Ilminster. Over the last eight months of time, money and much effort together with loads of support and brilliant work done on our behalf by James Purnell and his team at Knight Electrical Ltd, I am delighted to report that the Platinum Jubilee Clock problems have now been firmly identified and finally corrected. We are now confident, that at long last, this clock will work correctly for many years to come.
