Due to the very hot conditions in the cafe and kitchen we have had to take the difficult decision to close the cafe today, tomorrow and Friday to keep our volunteers safe. We have air con, cold drinks and ice creams aplenty in the shop so please come up and cool down!

Goofy, our robot cleaner, does a great job overnight on the shop and café floors but there are always corners he can't reach! That's where our deep clean team comes in, working quietly behind the scenes to keep everything sparkling.

Helen is one of our regulars, joining the team on the last Wednesday of every month at 6pm. She also pops in for early shifts and together with her husband Chris helps to pack our Christmas in a Box. Helen grew up in Ilmington before moving away when she married and always planned to volunteer here when she retired, which she did, just the year before lockdown. A regular churchgoer in the village, she wanted to get to know more local people, and loves the shop in particular because there's always time for a proper chat.

"It's a lovely sociable space — I'd encourage anyone with a few spare hours to join us."

Thank you Helen, and every one of our volunteers, you make Ilmington Community Shop and Café the special place it is.

Could you spare an hour or two a month? We'd love to have you on the team too.

Our volunteer appreciation continues - today meet Beverly.

Beverly moved to Tredington from Hampshire just before the pandemic, which made it hard for her to meet people, get a job and settle in. When she spotted an advert for volunteers at the Ilmington Shop, she decided to give it a go and hasn't looked back.

Beverly has been volunteering on Mondays from 12–3 for over five years. Her typical shift involves restocking the shelves after the weekend and tidying the stock room. Mondays might sound quiet with the café closed, but it can get surprisingly busy although with two volunteers on, it's always manageable.
Her favourite part? The people. She loves the banter with regular customers, chatting with workmen popping in for lunch, and pointing holidaymakers in the right direction.

Beverly would wholeheartedly recommend volunteering. You can offer as many or as few hours as suits you, the till is straightforward, and there's always someone on hand to help if you need it.

Thank you to our wonderful behind-the-scenes volunteers, you may not always be in the spotlight, but your work makes everything possible.
Meet Carol,
"I usually help clear up at the end of an event — I don't mind a late shift, as I rarely get to bed before midnight!"

"Volunteering has always been a big part of my life. I've run the Mother /Parent and Baby Group. I have listened to children read at school, which I still do and been a school governor for over 25 years. I've served on the village hall committee three times, handled their bookings for over 15 years, and chaired the school PTA for four years."

My advice? "Do it! You'll make friends, discover things about yourself you never knew, and feel part of something. I love it."

You don't need to live in Ilmington to volunteer at the Community Shop and Café.

Meet Marie-Laure. When Michele spotted Marie-Laure shopping one day, a simple question changed everything — would she like to volunteer? Living in Tredington and looking for a way to contribute to the community, Marie-Laure said yes.
She now works a regular Tuesday morning shift in the shop and also helps out wherever she's needed, in both the shop and café.

A particular highlight? Customers who love practising their French and German with her!

Her advice to anyone considering it is refreshingly honest: "Try it — you might like it, or you might not!"

Some of our volunteers can't commit to a regular shift — but that's no barrier. They simply step in when we need them most.

Meet Colette. Her volunteering journey began on her daily commute home from Chipping Campden surgery. She would pop in for essentials and promised herself she'd join the team when she retired. Two years on, she's never looked back!
Colette started working in the Café but then broadened her skills with some shifts in the shop. She loves the familiar faces, new faces, the team spirit and keeping her brain ticking over.
She particularly loves the moments of connection with visitors who share her memories of the building in its former life as a church such as attending Mass and having their children christened there.
Every shift is different and she's still learning which is exactly how she likes it.
Thinking of volunteering? Just pop in and have a chat with us. It might be the start of something wonderful.
