Wild Moors

Wild Moors We save and celebrate upland landscapes for nature, climate and people. Follow us to get closer to nature and help us protect and restore it. We must to act.

Wild Moors seeks to unlock an area of Britain’s uplands the size of Greater London for regeneration by 2030. Through an intensive programme of burning, draining and wildlife persecution lasting many decades Britain’s uplands have become severely degraded. These carbon-rich habitats are drying up and wildlife and communities have been left vulnerable to climate change. We need a step change. Wild M

oors is working to accelerate the transition to a net-zero, climate resilient future by creating an upland environment which is respected, restored and protected.

Major work is underway to restore peatlands in the uplands of South West England, a vital part of the UK’s largest natural carbon store.

When healthy, these ecosystems don’t just lock away carbon. They also improve water quality, help protect communities from flooding and provide essential habitats for wildlife.

This ambitious restoration is a true collaborative effort. Landowners and land managers are working alongside the South West Peatland Partnership, funded by Natural England, South West Water and the National Trust to bring these important habitats back to life.

A project on Dartmoor to reprofile the landscape aims to return the springy bog – and carbon store – to its natural condition

A major project will restore 1.5 million native trees to the uplands of Invergeldie Estate, bringing them back to areas where they’ve been lost.

Initiatives like this are vital for boosting biodiversity, tackling climate change, supporting land-based jobs and helping protect communities from flooding.

We need to see more action like this right across our uplands.

One of the largest woodland creation schemes ever approved in Scotland has been given the go ahead in Perthshire.

Did you know our uplands play a crucial role in the water we drink? 💧

They supply around 70% of the UK’s drinking water. By restoring peatlands, clough woodlands and ancient grasslands, we can improve water quality, support nature and help reduce flooding risks for communities downstream. 🌿

Protecting uplands means protecting our water for today and for future generations.

Getting land use right is essential to support sustainable food production, climate action, nature recovery and the economy — especially in our uplands.

We look forward to the new Land Use Framework being put into action to support future policy and legislation.

Efforts are under way to secure the Rothbury Estate in Northumberland for nature and the nation.

If successful, it would mark England’s largest land purchase for nature recovery in three decades.

The Government has announced that snares will be banned in England, bringing the law into line with existing prohibitions in Scotland and Wales.

The measure forms part of a new Animal Welfare Strategy, intended to strengthen the protection of wildlife.

Wild Moors welcomes the decision and urges Ministers to set out the next steps for implementing the ban without delay.

A ban on the use of snares in England is expected to be included in the Government’s Animal Welfare Plan, due to be published on Monday.

Wild Moors has long argued for such a ban, citing the significant suffering these devices inflict on foxes and their indiscriminate nature, which results in the injury of non-target species, including hares and badgers.

Animal welfare campaigners have long been calling for England to ban cruel and indiscriminate snare traps to bring the country in line with Wales and Scotland
