Bicclescombe Park Gentle Walk with Ilfracombe Friendship & Social

What an amazing turnout today, with 21 people of mixed abilities making their way slowly and surely around beautiful Bicclescombe Park.
Visiting every six weeks gives us the chance to really notice the changing seasons. Today we enjoyed colourful blooms, bright turquoise damselflies, and Jenny the Squirrel Lady feeding the local squirrels.
The heat meant we spent more time chatting around the shaded picnic tables than walking, but that is exactly what our walks are about: taking notice, moving at our own pace, making connections, and enjoying time together.
A huge thank you to Bicclescombe Mill for reserving our tables and looking after us so beautifully with lunch and refreshments. We also got to hear about Flourish At The Mill CIC and exciting future plans and ideas.

Instead of listening to the people who live and work here, you have chosen tired, stigmatising narratives about our community. We are sick of out of area parachute journalism putting Ilfracombe down while ignoring the reality we see every day: hardworking residents, professionals and volunteers keeping this place going.

North Devon Journal and Devon Live, shame on you for platforming this. Do you answer to the people of North Devon or just to Reach plc and its clickbait travel content?

We thought NDJ was supportive when you reported positively on our community events. After this, many of us are far less inclined to welcome your journalists and photographers. If you want to write about Ilfracombe, come and meet the actual town first.

Both sessions will be held at The Candar Lounge, Ilfracombe.

This week we touched on grief, memories, anniversaries and the people, and pets, who leave such a deep mark on our lives. There is no pressure to “move on” here, just space to be heard.

A taster from many of our gentle walks around Capstone and the Ilfracombe seafront. This is a regular 6 weekly walk with Ilfracombe Friendship & Social.

Over the years, we’ve enjoyed community engagement with Ilfracombe Museum, the Finding Nature’s Footprint project of North Devon Coast National Landscape and Sea Watch Foundation.

We’ve taken part in sea watching, spotting porpoise, dolphins, seals, and even a sunfish. Along the way, we’ve also identified marine birds, coastal plants and wildflowers.

Gentle walking, local nature, shared knowledge and community connection.
