We’re so excited to see our Bedfordshire service featured on Politics East.

Good social care is about enabling learning disabled people to live their lives their way: building relationships, making choices, developing skills and being part of their communities.

Yet learning disabled people are too often overlooked in wider conversations about the future of social care.

Our service was recently awarded five stars by the local authority, reflecting the commitment of colleagues who work tirelessly to support people to live life on their own terms. But, like many providers, we continue to face recruitment challenges and the pressure to do more with less.

Social care deserves to be seen, understood and invested in. Thank you to the Politics East team for helping bring these stories to a wider audience.

💜 What do you love most about working as a support worker?

We asked one of our support workers to share what makes the role so rewarding.

For many, it’s about the everyday moments. Helping someone build confidence, supporting their independence, celebrating their achievements and knowing you’ve made a meaningful difference to their day.

There’s so much to love about a career where helping people live the life they choose is at the heart of what you do.

Could support work be right for you? Come and be part of our story.

Being a Support Worker is about more than simply being there. 💜

It’s about listening to what someone wants, respecting their choices and supporting them to live life on their own terms.

It can mean encouraging someone as they build confidence, supporting greater independence or simply sharing the everyday moments that matter.

Because great support isn’t about taking over. It’s about standing alongside learning disabled people, recognising what matters to each person and supporting them to live the life they choose.

Could this be the kind of work you’ve been looking for?

Our new day opportunities centre in Flintshire is not just a space for the people we support. It's an asset to the community too. 🤝

There's a café and shop where locals can buy fresh produce and meals made with food grown on site. And plans to launch a vegetable box scheme and turn surplus produce into chutneys, pickles and jams. 🥦

The hub is also strengthening links between health and social care services.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board are using dedicated space to grow their Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy interventions in a community setting.

We believe that community is integral to wellbeing for everyone. Yet learning disabled people too often face barriers to inclusion, and experience higher rates of loneliness and isolation as a result.

That's why places like Coed Y Ddraig are so important. We're looking forward to a future where it's no longer unique.

💜 Applying for a care role from another sector? Never apologise for having a different background.

When you apply to join our team, you do not need a flawless CV in social care. What matters is how you connect your existing experience to the role.

Tell us how you support people, how you communicate, how you handle pressure and how you work in a team. Be specific with your examples. Saying "I worked in hospitality" is less helpful than explaining how you learned to stay patient during busy shifts and help people feel comfortable.

That level of detail makes it easy for us to see how your life experience will help you thrive as a support worker.

Three weeks on from its official opening, people we support at Coed Y Ddraig share what the service means to them. 💜

Activities at Coed Y Ddraig include gardening, woodwork, pottery, painting, sound baths, breath work, meditation, and employability skills sessions.

We're already thinking about the future, with plans to create a community forest and meditation area, a forest school, native tree planting and a specialist autism base. 🌳

But to see the difference this centre already making is what makes projects like Coed Y Ddraig so special!

💜 Thinking about starting a career in care, but have a few questions holding you back? We have answered some of the most common things people ask before applying.

From what experience you actually need, to how shifts work and the training you receive, getting clear information helps you decide if support work is right for you.

The biggest takeaway? You do not need a background in social care to make a brilliant support worker. You just need the right values, and our team will guide you through everything else.

Have a question we have not covered here? Ask us in the comments or explore current roles at hft.org.uk/jobs
